CALGARY, AB – The University of Winnipeg Wesman and Mount Royal University Cougars were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw during Friday evening's women's soccer fixture.
The Wesman jumped out to an early lead in the 10th minute when Chloe Zarillo struck the ball off a rebound past the MRU keeper.
After the Winnipeg goal, the Cougars turned up the pressure.
In the 35th minute,
Kareena Kassam swiftly dribbled the ball and attacked the Winnipeg defence. Kassam found Cougars rookie
Tamara Djurisic inside the six-yard box, and the first-year striker potted it past the Winnipeg keeper.
The score was level at one apiece going into the halftime break.
With the sun gone down and the lights shining bright, Mount Royal was determined to break the stalemate. However, the Wesman held on strong on their backend and cleared the Cougars' numerous chances in the second half. The two Canada West sides would have to settle for a draw.
The Cougars will look ahead to Sunday when they play host to another team from the east, the University of Manitoba Bisons, at 1 p.m. The Bisons currently sit at a 2-7 record after falling 2-0 to UVIC earlier today. Fans can catch the match on Sunday at Stadium Field or stream it live on Canada West TV.
