The Mount Royal University Cougars women's soccer team opened their Edmonton road trip against the MacEwan University Griffins on Saturday, but the game was suspended due to deteriorating air quality. The Prairie Division-leading Griffins took a 2-0 lead before the officials stopped the game in the 37th minute. The match will be rescheduled for a date yet to be announced and will resume from the 37th minute.
Following the postponement of Saturday's match, MRU secured their first win of the season on Sunday. The Cougars battled to a hard-fought 2-1 win over the University of Alberta Pandas, highlighted by
Sydney Danielewicz's game-winning goal.
MRU got off to an early lead at Foote Field. Danielewicz delivered an impressive ball to the surging Cougars forward,
Tamara Djurisic. The first-year striker collected the pass and swiftly struck the ball past the Pandas' keeper. Djurisic, a local from Edmonton, now has two goals for the year.
The Pandas managed to level the score in the 34th minute. Alberta midfielder Erin Hope sent a low corner kick toward the Cougars' front post that deceived Cougars goalkeeper
Torrance Langdon and found the back of the net.
The provincial rivals remained tied into the second half until Danielewicz and defender
Keilyn Stabler gave the Cougars the lead. In the 57th minute, Stabler sent in a high, curling cross toward the box that Danielewicz headed past the keeper. This highlight-reel goal marked Danielewicz's second of the 2023 campaign.
The Pandas pressed to equalize again but were unable to solve the steady play of Cougars' goalkeeper Langdon, who made six saves in the win.
Mount Royal prevailed for the road win and now holds a 1-3-2 record in Canada West play.
The Cougars will look to continue their battle for playoffs when they host a pair of central Canadian teams next weekend. MRU will host the University of Winnipeg Wesmen on Friday, September 22 at 6 p.m., followed by a meeting with the University of Manitoba Bisons on Sunday, September 24 at noon. Both games can be watched live at Stadium Field or streamed on
Canada West TV.
