MSOC: Flaksman's brace leads Cougars to dominating win over UFV

Box Score

CALGARY, AB – Pure dominance throughout the entire game.

Mount Royal University's men's soccer team secured their second consecutive victory, defeating the University of Fraser Valley Cascades 5-0. This fixture marked a rematch of last season's Canada West Quarter-Final, but the outcome was never in doubt.

Rookie striker Nikolas Meyer ignited the party early with a sublime header that found the back of the net, giving MRU an early 1-0 lead. This goal marked the German's first as a Cougar.

Just 13 minutes later, Meyer appeared to have gotten his second but Josh Flaksman was credited with the goal and Meyer was given the assist. Despite struggling to get out the scoresheet in the first few games, Nikolas Meyer was now finding the net with ease.

"It feels good because I didn't score in the first four or five games," said Meyer. "I'm not sure what the English word for it is, but I just feel free now!"

The Cougars didn't let up. Josh Flaksman extended MRU's lead to 3-0 in the first half. Flaksman delivered a commanding performance on the wing for MRU this weekend and was awarded with a pair of goals.

David Schaefer scored his second goal of the weekend with a beautiful left-footed strike from just inside the box. This tally marked Schaefer's team-leading fourth goal of the season.

Mount Royal's goalkeeper, Aidan Dumoulin, had a relatively quiet afternoon, making only one save. With this win, Dumoulin registered his fifth clean sheet of the 2023 season, leading in Canada West.

MRU sealed the game with their fifth goal in the 70th minute. Super-sub Miguel Da Rocha scored his first goal of the year on a fantastic solo run.

The 5-0 victory keeps the Cougars atop the Prairie Division with a 6-1-0 record. Fraser Valley's season record now stands at 1-5-0. MRU will head west for their next fixtures, first against UBCO on September 22 and then against UBC on September 23. Both matches can be streamed live on Canada West TV.
