CALGARY, AB – Back in the win column.
The MRU Cougars men's soccer team secured a 2-0 win over the University of Victoria Vikes on a sunny afternoon in Calgary. The Cougars came into the game as the seventh-ranked team in the nation and added to their already impressive season thus far.
The defeat marks the first loss of the season for the Vikes, who now sit at 3-1-1. The result is significant for both teams in the tight Canada West conference.
UVIC had a tremendous opportunity to take the lead over MRU, but
Aidan Dumoulin made a fantastic reactionary save from a hard shot by Vikes defender Jordan McKinty.
Mount Royal struck first in the 34th minute. After the Victoria keeper deflected a cross away, the ball fell to the right foot of
Nikolas Myroniuk, and the Cougars rookie made no mistake to give MRU a 1-0 lead.
Just seconds before the halftime break, the home side extended their lead. Looking for his second of the game, Myroniuk made a run through the box and was taken down by the Vikes. The referee awarded the Cougars a penalty kick. Veteran striker
David Schaefer stepped up to the spot and booted a shot into the left corner to give MRU a 2-0 lead after 45 minutes.
The Cougars cruised to victory in the second half, with a few near misses just over the bar from
Josh Flaksman and
Nikolas Meyer. The victory moves the Cougars to a 5-1-0 record and keeps them in the battle for the top spot in the Prairie Division.
Mount Royal will have a quick turnaround when they host the University of Fraser Valley Cascades on Sunday at 1 p.m. for a rematch of last year's Canada West Quarter-Final. The match can be caught live at Stadium Field or be streamed on
Canada West TV.
