On Sunday afternoon, the Mount Royal University Cougars men's soccer team took home early-season Crowchild Classic bragging rights with a 1-0 win over the University of Calgary Dinos.

Sunday's season opener was the Cougars' first opportunity to set the tone for the 2023 season and MRU head coach, Ryan Gyaki's squad gutted out the win at Dinosaur Field.

The Cougars and Dinos headed into the last five minutes of the match scoreless and with the likely outcome of a 0-0 draw in sight. However, Cougars' midfielder Abel Nesibu had other plans.

In the 87th minute, David Schaefer sent a long pass to Josh Flaksman just inside the box. Flaksman brought the ball down with an excellent touch and sent a short pass to Nesibu. A rushing Nesibu managed to get his foot on it and scored it past Dinos' keeper, Liam Hunter to give MRU the lead with only a few minutes remaining.

The Cougars would hold on to secure their first victory of the season.

Mount Royal will stay on the road next weekend when they take on the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns on September 1st and then head east for a battle with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on September 3rd. You can catch both games live on Canada West TV.

WSOC: MRU (1) at UBCO (1)

The UBCO Heat and MRU Cougars settled for a 1-1 draw in a Canada West women's soccer match on August 26 at Ken Woods Field in Vancouver.

The Heat found the back of the net early when Stefanie Young scored to give the home team a 1-0 lead. Young also set a program record with 13 shots in the match.

Cougars' keeper, Torrance Langdon had a busy game and registered seven saves.

Mount Royal evened up the score in the second half. Halftime substitution, Athena Fourlas scored for the Cougars in the 75th minute. Fourlas' tally was assisted by second-year midfielder, Jordan Grundl

The Cougars and Heat would have to settle for a 1-1 draw in Vancouver with neither team able to find twine again in the final minutes.

WSOC: MRU (1) AT TRU (3)

Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack women's soccer defeated the Mount Royal University Cougars 3-1 in the season opener on August 25 in Langley, BC.

The Wolfpack opened the scoring early with a header from Ainsley Grether in the eighth minute that got past Cougars' keeper, Torrance Langdon.

TRU extended their lead in the 25th minute with a goal from Emily Clark.

The Cougars got one back just before halftime. Tamara Djurisic settled a cross and tapped a pass back to Sydney Danielewicz. Danielewicz struck the ball from just outside the box and into the upper right part of the goal to make it 2-1 going into the half.

Thompson Rivers regained their two-goal lead in the 85th minute. Bridget Baird stretched to tap in a goal to secure the win for the Wolfpack in the season opener.

The Cougars will continue their British Columbia road trip when they head to the island to take on the University of Victoria Vikes on September 2. Catch the match live on Canada West TV.
