Riley Sawchuk has been named the the U SPORTS First Team All-Canadian list, the league announced Wednesday evening. The top line centre put up a historic season for the Cougars in 2022-23.
Sawchuk ended the Canada West regular season ranking first in goals (20), assists (29), points (49) and points-per-game (1.81). The 23-year-old was a force at even-strength play with 18 of his goals when playing five-on-five. The forward's staggering offensive numbers were complimented by his responsible defensive play. Sawchuk was a major factor to the Cougars league-leading penalty kill of 86.8 per cent. The two-way game that Sawchuk gave his team was been a huge contributor to his own success and the Cougars' success in 2022-23. Sawchuk, a former member of the Edmonton Oil Kings and Tri-City Americans, was also named the Western Hockey League (WHL) Grad of the Month for October 2022.
Most recently, Sawchuk signed with the American Hockey League's (AHL) Grand Rapids Griffins which is the affiliate to the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League.
