Mount Royal University women's hockey won their third straight game with a 6-1 victory over the MacEwan Griffins on Friday night at Flames Community Arena.

The first period was low event hockey and left the two sides scoreless after 20 minutes.

In the second period, the Cougars wasted no time in lighting the lamp. Courtney Kollman finished a wraparound that just beat the pad of Griffins netminder, Brooke Fawcett.

A few minutes later, MRU forward Athena Hauck got a pass right in her wheelhouse. The Grand Prairie, Alta. local sniped the puck bar-down to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.

Mount Royal added to their lead late in the second with another goal from Kollman off a superb pass from her second-year linemate, Aliya Jomha. The tally was Kollman's team-leading 11th.

With 39 seconds left in the frame, Emma Bergesen unloaded a rocket slapshot from the point that made its way untouched and into the top corner of the net. The powerplay cannon from the Norwegian defender gave MRU a 4-0 lead heading into the final 20 minutes.

Midway through the third, MacEwan got on the board and broke the Cougars 182-minute shutout streak. Alle Isley fed Claire Hobbs a beautiful backhand pass from behind the net and Hobbs quickly shot it past Cougars goaltender Kaitlyn Ross.

The Griffins didn't have much time to celebrate. Ava Metzger got a goal back for MRU just seven seconds later to make it 5-1.

Mount Royal capped it off with a backhand goal from Kaia Borbandy with 30 seconds left.

The victorious Cougars will rematch with the Griffins tomorrow night in Edmonton. Catch it live on Canada West TV.

MBB: BDN (102) at MRU (81)

The Brandon University Bobcats took a big win over the MRU Cougars men's basketball team, 102-81.

Brandon came out hot, with a quick seven unanswered in the first minute of play, going on

Kevointe Watts stormed the floor, forcing his way past two Brandon defenders before finding Daniel Mulder under the rim to put up their first basket of the game.

The Bobcats seemed almost automatic from all areas of the court, with Anthony Tsegakele at the helm. He had the speed and skills to avoid the Cougars defence, spinning into a scoring position in the paint. He finished the night with 25 points, 12 rebounds and three steals on 53 per cent shooting.

BDN led 26-19 at the end of the first quarter, Marc Dobell taking time to reorganise and restrategize during the break.

The start of the second quarter saw play even out between both squads, but Brandon remained with the upper hand, with a commanding 16 point lead over Mount Royal. Both Jahmaal Gardner and Tsegakele had 15 by half time, but Tsegakele reigned more impressively having already recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds on his stat sheet.

Holt Tomie and Watts were both strong for the home team but were constantly being shut down by a larger Bobcat squad. Ijah Nelson stepped up in the gap and was leading MRU with 12 at half.

Nelson finished the night with 18 points and three rebounds, while Watts had 14 points and Tomie had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Brandon maintained their lead through the third, with Mount Royal working to catch up but were caught flat for rebounds and slow to get back on transition to defence.

The Cougars trailed by 25 going into the final ten minutes of play and couldn't make up the lost ground before the last whistle. Mount Royal now drops to 8-9 on the season. Brandon improves to 9-8.

Both teams are back in Kenyon Court for a 7 p.m. tip-off Saturday night.

WBB: BDN (30) at MRU (62)

The MRU Cougars women's basketball team blew out the Brandon University Bobcats in their Friday night matchup, 62-30.

Brandon struggled to find the basket through the first half, the ball bouncing everywhere but in.

MRU saw an incredible performance spread across 11 players, with the bench combining for 35 points.

Nora Luca was a big player from early on, igniting the energy in the stands when her layup did a 720 rotation on the rim before dropping. First year Tony Fuchsbauer also saw time on the floor, finishing with a season high seven and a half minutes played and her first points of the season.

Jordan Blaskin put on a show herself, with eight rebounds, two steals and 10 points on the board.

This squad was unstoppable, boasting a 26 point lead by half time. The second quarter alone saw the Cougars put up 24 points while holding BDN to only four.

Luca quickly became double-teamed in the paint but used her power to push through the wall and draw fouls in her favour. She finished the night with 11 points and five rebounds. Her performance earned her the title of player of the game.

"Honestly, all of us played great as a team and that's what matters most to me," said Luca. "We've got to come out with intensity again tomorrow."

The visitors were led by Noah Garcia in the post, finishing the night with nine points and four rebounds, putting up a fierce battle against a strong Cougar offence.

Brandon made an impressive fourth quarter comeback, closing the massive gap made early on by Mount Royal, but unfortunately it was too little too late, the Cougars couldn't be contained.

One minute left to play, 32 point lead. The Cougars were in a league of their own.

MRU now improves their record to 10-7 while BDN continues to fight for their first win of the season, falling to 0-17.

Both teams are back in Kenyon Court for a Saturday evening showdown starting at 5 p.m.

Tomorrow's game will also honour MRU women's basketball graduate Jordan Blaskin as she plays in her final regular season home game of her university career. Come out and support Jordan after an impressive six years with the team.
