WHKY: Mount Royal defeated during home game against Huskies

Box Score The Mount Royal University women's hockey team engaged in a hard fought battle against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in front of a packed home stadium Friday night. 

The first period witnessed the Cougars taking the lead, outshooting the Huskies 14 to three. 

Just under six minutes into the period, Huskies Kelsey Hall received a tripping penalty, granting the Cougars an early opportunity to score on a power play. Despite the chance, the Huskies defence effectively prevented any goal attempts by the Cougars. 

With two minutes remaining in the period, MRU's Lyndsey Janes scored the first goal of the game, propelling her team to a 1 – 0 lead over their opponents. Assists were provided by Ava Metzger and Julia Duke.

Thirty seconds before the period ended, U of S's Shelby Williamson received a tripping penalty, giving the Cougars another power play opportunity that extended into the second period. 

Twenty-six seconds into the second period, MRU's Breanne Trotter received a penalty for checking to the head, briefly making it a four-on-four game.

Just over two minutes in, the Huskies retaliated with Mallory Dyer leveling the score 1 – 1, assisted by Kara Kondrat and McKenna Bolger. 

Approximately one and a half minutes later, the Huskies seized a 2 – 1 lead over the Cougars as Kelsey Hall netted a goal, assisted by Kendra Zuchotzki and Isabella Pozzi. 

Shortly after, Kennedy Brown of U of S received a tripping penalty, granting the Cougars a power play advantage. Capitalizing on the opportunity, Jori Hansen-Young found the net, equalizing the score 2 - 2, with assists from Lyndsey Janes and Aliya Jomha

Two minutes later, MRU's Sydney Benko received a slashing penalty, giving the Huskies a power play advantage. However, the Cougars defence remained resilient, denying any goals. 

Midway through the period, MRU's Aliya Jomha was penalized for holding, granting the Huskies another power player opportunity. Despite this, the Cougars managed to fend off any goal attempts. 

With thirty seconds remaining in the period, the Huskies Sophie Lalor scored, propelling them to a 3 – 2 lead over the Cougars, with assists from Isabella Pozzi and Makenna Stevens. 

In the third period, the Huskies expanded their lead early on. 

Just over a minute and a half into the period, Kennedy Brown propelled her team to a 4 – 2 lead over the Cougars, assisted by Kenzie Lausberg.

Twenty seconds later, MRU's Jordynne Hojnocki received a slashing penalty, granting the Huskies a power play advantage. 

Taking full advantage of the opportunity, Sophie Lalor scored for the Huskies, extending their lead to 5 – 2. Assists were provided by Kendra Zuchotzki and Isabella Pozzi.

Shortly after, MRU's Breanne Trotter received a hooking penalty, giving the Huskies another early power play opportunity in the period. However, the Cougars managed to defend their goal successfully.  

The Huskies gained another power play advantage seven minute into the period after MRU's Athena Hauck received a penalty for interference. 

Subsequently, the Huskies McKenna Bolger received a hooking penalty, leading to a brief four-on-four game. 

The final score witnessed the Cougars falling to the Huskies 5 – 2. 

The Mount Royal University women's hockey team will play their last home game of the year against the University of Saskatchewan on Dec. 2 at 5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased here
