Players Bench Athletes of the Week: October 30 - November 5

Female Athlete of the Week

The Cougars women's basketball team opened their season on the road with two games versus the MacEwan Griffins. In a dominating performance on Friday, Mount Royal was victorious 76-41 and on Saturday, while MacEwan tried to get back into the game, the Cougars still pulled ahead with a 55-51 win.

This week's Players Bench Female Athlete of the Week is forward Harriette Mackenzie. Last weekend Mackenzie led her team on the court with her aggressive play. In Friday night's victory she collected 12 points and on Saturday she helped her team in their close victory with 13 points. In total she notched 24 rebounds over the two games. Mackenzie is in her third year of eligibility, but her first year on the Cougars and hails from Comox, BC. She is enrolled in Open Studies.

Male Athlete of the Week

This past weekend Mount Royal's men's soccer team earned their first Canada West Championship title in program history. In front of over 500 fans on Saturday afternoon at Mount Royal's Stadium Field, they faced the defending champion UBC Thunderbirds. It was a close match, with opportunities on both ends of the pitch, but Mount Royal was victorious 1-0 over UBC, thanks to a goal scored by defender Ethan Keen. The team next heads to Sydney, Nova Scotia for the U SPORTS National Championship, taking place November 9 - 12.

The Players Bench Male Athlete of the Week is Aidan Dumoulin. While his team was busy looking for advances up the field, Dumoulin was hard at work keeping the ball out of the net. The first-year keeper made some huge saves, playing the ball aggressively in the box, to keep his team in the lead. This clean sheet was Dumoulin's 11th of the season. Last week the Calgary local was named to both the Canada West second All-Star Team and the All-Rookie team. Dumoulin is presently enrolled in Mount Royal's open studies program.
