Box Score The Mount Royal University men's hockey team faced the University British Columbia Thunderbirds in an intense match Friday night at their home arena.
The Cougars successfully defended their home turf, securing a 4 – 3 victory and putting an end to the Thunderbirds undefeated winning streak.
The Thunderbirds took an early lead into the first period, with Carson Miller scoring the opening goal, assisted by teammates Tian Rask and Jonathan Smart.
Just under six minutes into the game, Cougars
Dawson Milliken was called for interference, resulting in a penalty, and giving the Thunderbirds a power play advantage.
With seven minutes remaining in the period, Cougars
Connor Bouchard and
Clayton Hanus assisted
Robbie Holmes in leveling the score at 1 – 1.
UBC's Jack Wismer was penalized for cross checking with just under four minutes left in the period, but the Cougars were unable to capitalize on the power play opportunity.
The second period witnessed both teams scoring points.
Just four minutes into the period, MRU's
Jaden Senkoe was penalized for tripping, providing the Thunderbirds a power play opportunity.
Shortly after, Thunderbirds Conner McDonald was sent to the penalty box for tripping, shifting the powerplay advantage back to the Cougars.
With less than three minutes remaining in the period, MRU's
Clayton Hanus propelled the Cougars into a 2 - 1 lead.
In the last moments of the period, UBC's Scott Atkinson was penalized for roughing, while MRU's
Connor Blake was simultaneously penalized for holding.
Just before the periods end, Thunderbirds Sam Huo assisted Jake Lee in leveling the score at 2 -2.
The majority of the third period witnessed both teams fiercely contesting possession of the puck, continuing until the last few minutes of the game.
With just over five minutes remaining, Cougars
Connor Bouchard and
Kurtis Smythe assisted
Tristan Zandee in securing a 3 – 2 lead.
Shortly after, UBC's Liam Kindree narrowed the gap for the Thunderbirds, bringing the score to 3 – 3. He received an assist by Sam Huo.
With just two minutes remaining, MRU's
Clayton Hanus propelled the Cougars back into the lead with a score of 4 – 3. He received assistance from
Robbie Holmes and
Connor Bouchard.
The Cougars managed to fend off their opponents, securing a victory at home.
Player of the game,
Tristan Zandee, acknowledged the significant challenge they faced going up against the Thunderbirds.
"We just prepared really well," he said. "Tried to shut their top guys down as best we could and played our game."
