Box Score
CALGARY, AB – Despite a resilient performance by Mount Royal, the University of Winnipeg Wesmen men's basketball team secured an 83-72 victory at Kenyon Court Saturday night.
The Cougars provided a much finer effort in the second part of a mini-series against one of the nation's top teams. However, the Wesmen showed why they are highly regarded, elevating their play and taking home their second win in as many nights.
Sam Barnie took advantage of an elevated role with MRU's injuries, scoring 12 of his 16 points in the first half.
Although the Cougars displayed impressive play early, Winnipeg held a six-point advantage at the halftime break.
Star guards
Holt Tomie and
Keivonte Watts put up bounce-back performances on Saturday. Tomie scored a game-high 22 points while Watts registered 16 of his own. The pair struggled to find their rhythm in Friday's blowout loss but returned to form today.
The Wesmen fended off the Cougars' surge on the back of Alberto Gordo's all-around stellar night. The 2022-23 CW All-Rookie Team member filled the scoresheet with 21 points, nine rebounds, three assists and four steals.
At times, the Winnipeg lead dwindled to just a couple points in the fourth quarter. Cougars rookie
Killian Yopa threw down a rim-rocking slam in the final quarter, bringing heightened energy to the gym that MRU had been looking for all weekend.
Ultimately, the deep Wesmen roster prevailed, moving them to a 7-1 record. After a bright start to the season, the loss to Winnipeg marks MRU's fourth in a row, giving them a 3-5 record.
Mount Royal will head down the highway to Lethbridge for a couple of games against the Pronghorns next weekend. Stream all the action live on
