MBB: Bisons defeat Cougars in tight contest

Box Score
CALGARY, AB – The University of Manitoba Bisons men's basketball team prevailed victorious for the second night in a row with an 85-77 win over the MRU Cougars on Saturday night at Kenyon Court.

The two Canada West teams were neck-and-neck early in the game, leaving them tied after the first quarter.

Midway through the opening quarter Mount Royal suffered a significant loss when star guard Ijah Nelson went down with an apparent knee injury. The second-year Cougar left the game and did not return.

With the absence of Nelson, the momentum began to shift in the Bisons' favour. Manitoba big man Jonam Kazadi was owning the paint and scoring with ease down low.

The intense pressure caused MRU to collapse into a flurry of turnovers. The Cougars possessed a sliver of momentum at the end of the half when Aaron Fernandes drained a deep three-pointer to beat the buzzer. After two quarters, the Bisons led by eight.

The Cougars began to will their way back into the game in the third quarter. Keivonte Watts put the team on his back on both ends of the court, causing the Manitoba lead to dwindle down.

However, Bison forward Kazadi continued to display dominance on the offensive end. The star finished with 21 points, six rebounds and two steals.

MRU wing Sam Barnie knocked down a pair of flushes from three-point territory to keep the Cougars in it going into the final quarter.

As time winded down, the score remained tight with Manitoba leading by a few buckets. MRU put on some pressure but the Bisons held strong and secured the road sweep over the Cougars.

Darren Watts and Simon Hildebrandt each put up double-figure scoring for the Bisons. Keivonte Watts finished with a team-high 21 points for MRU.

Mount Royal will finish their six-game stretch of home games next weekend against the University of Winnipeg Wesman. Manitoba returns to their home court for a couple of battles against the Lethbridge Pronghorns. Fans can stream every game live on Canada West TV.
