The Mount Royal University Cougars women's basketball team defeated the University of Manitoba Bisons 72-66 Friday night at Kenyon Court.
Mount Royal was forced to play without the services of
Jamie Lalor after the guard sustained an injury last weekend against Alberta. Despite the significant loss of Lalor, the Cougars rallied in her absence.Â
MRU started off with a bang with a corner three from
Abbey Wilkinson. The Cougars held a commanding lead early but the Bisons rallied back to keep it close in the first quarter.Â
The Cougars went into the halftime break up by eight, highlighted by first half 10 points from
Nora Luca. The Calgary local finished with a team-high 15 points.Â
Manitoba set the tone for the second half. Emily Johnson's eight third-quarter points kept the Bisons within striking distance. Johnson's 16 points led the away teamÂ
Marissa Richards starred in the third quarter with a pair of tough layups while also drawing a foul on each of them. The second-year guard was pivotal to MRU's success on Friday.Â
Late in the fourth quarter, the Cougars drained a dagger to solidify their first win on homecourt this season.
Tanis Metcalfe got the hoop and the harm after a hard foul from the Bisons.Â
