Box Score CALGARY, AB – The University of Alberta Pandas women's basketball team secured a hard-fought victory against the Mount Royal University Cougars, prevailing 67-64 in overtime on Saturday evening at Kenyon Court.
Mount Royal displayed a stronger performance at the beginning of the game compared to Friday's home opener, trailing by just five points at the conclusion of the low-scoring first quarter.
During the second quarter, the Cougars showcased their best basketball of the weekend.
Abbey Wilkinson's back-to-back threes granted MRU their first lead of the game, complemented by
Tanis Metcalfe's contribution with a pair of jumpers.
On the defensive end, the Pandas struggled to find their rhythm and were contained by MRU's tight defence. Jenna Harpe continued to be Alberta's offensive catalyst, making timely shots to keep the Pandas in contention.
Heading into halftime, the Cougars led by 13, outscoring Alberta 25-7 in the second quarter.
Determined to reclaim the lead, Alberta emerged strongly in the second half, rekindling the form seen in their blowout win on Friday. They battled back to within six points by the end of the third quarter and regained the lead in the fourth.
The final quarter saw a back-and-forth exchange of baskets between the Cougars and Pandas, intensifying the competition.
Harriette Mackenzie showcased her prowess in the paint, bringing MRU within two.
Marissa Richards was fouled with five seconds left and successfully converted both free throws, sending the game into overtime.
Alberta tightened their defence during the extra period, preventing the Cougars from scoring until the final minute.
Ultimately, the Pandas emerged victorious for their second consecutive win. After the weekend, both teams hold a 2-2 record in Canada West play.
Looking ahead, the Cougars will continue their homestand next weekend as they host the University of Manitoba Bisons for a pair of games.
