WBB: Cougars fall to Pandas in home opener

Box Score
CALGARY, AB – The University of Alberta Pandas took down the MRU Cougars women's basketball team 61-38 during Friday night's game at Kenyon Court.

The Pandas were dominant right from the tip on both ends of the floor. Mount Royal only managed to register their first field goal make with 1:50 left in the opening quarter.

MRU pushed back in the second quarter. Forward Tanis Metcalfe hit a trio of midrange jumpers to keep the Cougars close behind Alberta.

The Pandas went into the break with a 16-point cushion, highlighted by 10 first half points from Ella Rees.

Alberta continued their dominance in the second half. Guard Jenna Harpe was lights out from beyond the arc, going 5-for-5 for a team-high 17 points. Harpe's three-pointers were a major factor in the Pandas' successful Friday night.

Along with the excellent performance from deep, the Pandas won the battle in the key with 24 points in the paint to the Cougars 10.

A bright spot for the Mount Royal was fifth-year guard Julia Summers. The veteran Cougar scored a team-high 10 points while grabbing five boards in 27 minutes.

Ultimately, the Pandas broke away in the fourth quarter thanks to a couple of big shots from Jenna Harpe and consistent defence.

The Cougars will look for a bounce-back performance tomorrow evening in a rematch against Alberta. Tip-off from Kenyon Court is at 5 p.m. and tickets can be purchased online.
