Box Score The Mount Royal University men's hockey team hosted the University of Alberta Golden Bears Friday night in an energizing battle.Â
Both teams came out firing in the first period.
In the opening three minutes, MRU's
Clayton Hanus earned a two-minute penalty for high sticking, providing the Golden Bears with an early advantage. However, MRU's defence effectively prevented any goals. Â
Shortly after,
Clayton Hanus incurred an additional penalty for high sticking, giving the Golden Bears another opportunity on a four-on-five advantage. The Cougars defended their net, denying the Golden Bears the chance to capitalize on the power play.
With eight minutes remaining in the period,
Clayton Hanus scored, propelling MRU into the lead with assists from
Robbie Holmes and
Blake Stevenson.Â
Seven minutes from the end of the period, U of A's Daneel Lategan was ejected from the game for major interreference. Bruce MacGregor served the resulting five-minute penalty for the Golden Bears.Â
In the last three minutes of the period, MRU faced two penalties, with
Jaden Senkoe in the box for high sticking and
Kyle Walker for interference.Â
The Cougars came into the second period hungry to expand their lead.Â
Within the first 20 seconds, MRU's
Connor Bouchard scored, assisted by
Kyle Walker.Â

Robbie Holmes extended the Cougars lead even further. He was assisted by

Clayton Hanus increased the Cougars lead to 5 – 0, assisted by
Connor Bouchard and
Robbie Holmes.Â
The third period began with both teams vying for possession of the puck.Â
Just over five minutes into the period, U of A's Curtis Trolley was penalized for hooking, sending him to the box and giving MRU a power play advantage. The Golden Bears successfully fended off any goal attempts by the Cougars.

Connor Bouchard of MRU was penalized for cross-checking, providing the Golden Bears a power play advantage.Â
They capitalized on this opportunity, securing their first goal of the game as Josh Prokop found the net with assistance from Dylan Plouffe and Noah Boyko. Â
In the last minute of the game, U of A's Dylan Plouffe was penalized for slashing.Â
The game concluded with the Cougars securing a 5 – 1 victory over the Golden Bears.Â
