WHKY: MRU earns overtime victory over the Bisons

Box Score Calgary, AB - In their second game of the weekend against University of Manitoba the Mount Royal University Cougars secured an overtime 4-3 victory.

Following the Cougars 6-1 win over the Bisons last night, Manitoba showed up hungry for the rematch today. The play was even with opportunities on nets at either end of the ice to start the game. Both teams were looking to capitalize on a lucky break, and it was Mount Royal who found it first. Forward Aliya Jomha made a stellar cross ice pass in the offensive zone to teammate Breanne Trotter who fed the puck to second-year Allee Gerrard in the slot for a redirection into the net. The rest of the period featured lots of back and forth, but no further goals.

Eight minutes into the second period the Bisons got into a bit of trouble and found themselves stuck in their end as the Cougars held strong in the neutral zone, making it hard for them to get a change for fresh skaters on the ice. Eventually Mount Royal first-year defender Jordynne Hojnocki found herself on the blue line with the puck and fired a hard shot on Bisons goalkeeper Emily Shippam. Veteran forward Athena Hauck made quick work of the rebound and buried the puck to put Mount Royal ahead by two goals. Only seconds later Manitoba responded with a point shot and goal by Camille Enns, closing the gap on the scoreboard. Late in the period on the point Cougars first-year Jordynne Hojnocki found the back of the Bisons net through the crowd for her first Canada West goal and to put the Cougars up 3-1 going into the intermission.

In the third period the battle continued and eventually the Bisons caught lucky breaks. Third-year Ashley Keller buried the puck 13 minutes in and then with only three minutes to go second-year Dana Goertzen tied the game 3-3 to send the contest to overtime.

In sudden death overtime play both teams were aggressive on the puck, looking for an opening past the opposing defenders, but three minutes in it was Mount Royal's Trotter who buried the puck for the win.

These victories give Mount Royal a 6-2 record so far this season. The Cougars are on the road next weekend to face the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds who presently sit in first place in Canada West standings with nine wins. Fans can watch the games live on Canada West TV.
