WHKY: Cougars dominate the Bisons in Calgary

Box Score Calgary, AB - The MRU Cougars women's hockey team took a dominant 6-1 victory over the University of Manitoba Bisons on home ice in Calgary Friday night.

The first period was back and forth, with opportunities for both teams. Halfway through the period first-year Gabby Lindsay found third-year Kaia Borbandy who buried the puck to open the scoring part way through the period. The rest of the play continued scoreless and the Cougars took the first period 1-0.

In the second period Mount Royal came out with a strong offensive attack, putting the Bisons on their heels. Capitalizing on a holding penalty assessed to Manitoba, veteran Cougars defender Alexandria Spence scored only a minute into the period on the power play. A few minutes later her teammate, second-year Allee Gerrard, found the back of the net. Gerrard was followed soon after with goals by third-year Sydney Benko and fourth-year Athena Hauck. The second period of play concluded 5-0 for Mount Royal.

The Bisons came out for the third period with more energy, but it was not until nearly 15 minutes into the period that fourth-year defender Camryn Gillis netted their first and only goal of the game, taking the Cougars netminder Kaitlyn Ross' shutout away. Mount Royal answered with a goal by second-year Kiana McNinch a minute later.

Bisons goalie Meagan Relf stopped 35 shots through the 60 minutes while Cougars netminder Kaitlyn Ross made 28 saves. Spence from the Cougars was named Player of the Game with one goal and one assist in the game.

The Cougars and Bisons face off in a rematch tomorrow, Saturday, October 28 at Flames Community Arenas in Calgary at 3 p.m. MT. Fans can purchase tickets to enjoy the action in person, or watch live on Canada West TV.
