Female Athlete of the Week
In the first hockey crowchild classic matchup of the season, Mount Royal's women's hockey team battled the Dinos last weekend. On Friday at home, the Cougars let University of Calgary take the lead early and remained scoreless until the third period, when they found the back of the net four times for a dominating 4-1 victory. Up the road on Saturday night both teams came ready for battle and the game was tied 1-1 through the second period. In the third period, however, Mount Royal took advantage of penalties for two power play goals and earned the second win of the weekend with a 3-1 score over the Dinos.Â
Leading her squad on the ice was this week's Players Bench Female Athlete of the Week Jerzey Watteyne. On Friday night the forward got the Cougars goal streak rolling by burying the teams first goal of the game 12 minutes and 48 seconds into the third period. Watteyne also assisted a goal by teammate Sydney Benko a few minutes later. A first year forward from Lafleche, SK, Watteyne is studying Business at Mount Royal.
Male Athlete of the Week
As the soccer regular season nears the end of competition the battles have become more fierce as every point counts towards the playoff standings. This past weekend Mount Royal's men's soccer team faced the Canada West prairie division No. 2 ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears and No. 5 ranked MacEwan Griffins. The Cougars earned a 2-1 victory over the Golden Bears and settled for a 1-1 tie with the Griffins, maintaining their No. 1 standing.Â
Leading his team on the field last weekend, the Players Bench Male Athlete of the Week is David Schaefer. In Saturday's highly important match with Alberta, Schaefer pushed his team forward on the pitch and in the standings. The Golden Bears opened scoring in the first half and Schaefer responded by finding the back of the net in the 36th minute. In the second half both team battled hard, but once again Schaefer stepped up to bury the ball in the 77th minute with the game winning goal. With these two goals, Schaefer is now tied in Mount Royal's record books for single season goals with nine total. Hailing from Berlin, Germany, the fifth-year forward is enrolled in Mount Royal's Health and Physical Education program
