Box Score The Mount Royal University men's hockey team experienced a challenging loss Saturday evening, as they were defeated by the Dinos on their home turf.Â
The Dinos came out aggressive in the first period.Â
Assisted by Riley Stotts and Jake Poole, U of C's Colson Gengenbach secured the first points of the game just four minutes in.Â
Shortly after, Noah King of the Dinos was penalized for holding, sending him to the penalty box and granting MRU the power play advantage.Â
Roughly halfway through the first period, the Cougars
Jaxon Martens received a cross checking penalty. However, the Dinos failed to capitalize on the given power play. Â Â
The Cougars
Kurtis Smythe was also sent to the box for tripping thirteen minutes into the period, granting the Dinos another power play advantage. The MRU defence proved effective, preventing any shots from finding the net. Â
With four minutes left in the period, the Dinos managed to extend their lead, with Jake Poole and Dakota Krebs assisting Adam Kydd in bringing their team to a 2 – 0 lead.Â
The second period witnessed both teams incurring numerous penalty calls. Â
MRU's
Robbie Holmes was early to receive a tripping penalty, granting U of C the power play advantage. Four minutes later, the Dinos Zach Wytink was cited for roughing, providing MRU with an opportunity.Â
Just past the halfway mark, the Dinos Dakota Krebs was sent to the box for cross checking, giving MRU a five-on-three advantage. The Dinos defence effectively thwarted any scoring attempts by MRU. Â
The Dinos Jadon Joseph was later penalized for tripping, while the Cougars
Connor Bouchard was cited for embellishment simultaneously. Â Â
With seven minutes left in the period, MRU's
Tristan Zandee was penalized for roughing, providing the Dinos with another power play advantage. Roughly two minutes later, U of C's Adam Kydd was penalized for tripping, granting MRU a power play. Â
With just under five minutes left in the period, the Cougars
Connor Bouchard secured a goal with assists from
Clayton Hanus and Jaden Senko, narrowing the deficit 1 – 2.Â
MRU's
Blake Stevenson was penalized for interference with three minutes left in the period. The Dinos capitalized on the power play opportunity, with Colson Gengenbach and Jake Poole assisting Jake Gricius in extending their lead 3 – 1.Â
The period concluded with Dinos Dylan Anderson being sent to the penalty box for tripping.Â
MRU began the third period with a power play advantage, however the Dinos successfully defended their net.Â
Slightly over two minutes in, MRU's
Michael Ladyman was penalized for hooking and sent to the penalty box. A minute later, the Dinos Riley Stotts was also sent to the box for hooking, resulting in a four-on-four game.Â
Late into the period, MRU secured an additional goal with
Blake Stevenson narrowing the Dinos lead 2 – 3. He was assisted by
Clayton Hanus and
Connor Bouchard.Â
The Dinos ultimately proved to be too much for the Cougars, handing them a 3 – 2 loss.Â
