Three Cougars teams made the trip to Edmonton during the Thanksgiving weekend. Both the men's and women's hockey teams played one half of a home-and-home series at Clare Drake Arena against the University of Alberta. Meanwhile, the women's soccer team made the trip north to resume a match against the MacEwan Griffins, which was originally suspended in the 37th minute on September 16 due to poor air quality.

The Cougars' men's hockey team secured their third straight win to start the 2023-24 season and their first road victory of the year in an exciting overtime match against the Alberta Golden Bears.
Alberta took a 1-0 lead in the first period, but the Cougars equalized with a goal from
Spencer Moe off a great pass from
Dawson Milliken.
The Golden Bears regained the lead with two second-period goals, seemingly in control of the game. Just before the period ended,
Tristan Zandee jammed the puck across the line for his first goal as a Cougar, cutting the lead to one.
In the final regulation frame, Mount Royal once again evened the score, this time with a powerplay goal from
Kyle Walker. The veteran defenceman made his season debut after missing the first two games due to injury. Walker's goal on the man-advantage sent the game to overtime.
In the sudden-death period that followed, the smooth-skating blueliner
Clayton Hanus maneuvered his way through the Alberta defense. Although he was initially stopped by Golden Bears netminder Matt Berlin, Hanus quickly collected his own rebound and backhanded the puck over Berlin to win the game for Mount Royal.
The Cougars will have another home-and-home series this week, taking on their crosstown rivals, the University of Calgary Dinos. MRU will visit the Dinos at Father David Bauer Arena on Thursday before hosting them for a rematch on Saturday. Tickets for Saturday's game can be purchased

The MRU women's hockey team suffered their second consecutive loss to the Alberta Pandas, falling 2-1 at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton on Saturday.
After having their banner-raising night spoiled by a 3-0 loss to the Pandas, the Cougars were unable to avenge the defeat. Alberta took a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes and were on their way to another victory.
The Cougars managed to come within one goal when
Kiana McNinch scored with under four minutes left in the third period.
However, McNinch's third goal of the young season would be the only tally for the Cougars and the Pandas held on for the win.
Mount Royal will look to bounce back during an early-season Crowchild Classic against the Dinos. They will host their nemesis at Flames Community Arenas on Friday, October 13 and then have a rematch across town on Saturday, October 14. Tickets for Friday's game can be purchased

Mount Royal's women's soccer team made a quick trip to Edmonton to resume the match that originally started on September 16 but was suspended due to poor air quality in the area. Before the match was postponed, the Cougars and Griffins played 37 minutes of the first half, with the Griffins taking a 2-0 lead. On Sunday, the two Canada West teams played the remaining 53 minutes. MacEwan extended their lead to three in the 49th minute.
However, Cougars striker
Tamara Djurisic reduced the deficit to two with a highlight-reel free kick from a distance. This goal was the first-year player's eighth of the season, tying her for third in Canada West and ranking her first among rookies.
The Cougars will travel to the lower mainland for a couple of matches to finish off the regular season next weekend. First, they will visit the Trinity Western Spartans on October 13, followed by a match against the UFV Cascades. Both games can be watched live on
Canada West TV.
