MSOC: Cougars gut out 1-0 win over Pronghorns

Box Score
CALGARY, AB – It may not have been the prettiest win for the MRU Cougars men's soccer team, but fortunately for them, the game ended in their favor, thus securing three points for the home team. The University of Lethbridge fell to the Cougars by a 1-0 score at Stadium Field on Sunday afternoon.

Looking for his first goal of the year, forward Jonathan Walter just barely missed the top half of the net, firing one over the crossbar.

However, Walter was determined to get the monkey off his back. In the 20th minute, the 2022 U SPORTS All-Rookie striker calmly dribbled the ball inside the box, moving to open space and released a shot from just inside the penalty area. The shot sailed through the crowded Pronghorns defense and right into the top left corner of the net. Walter's shot couldn't have been placed any better, and he finally had his first goal of the year.

The rest of the first half proved to be low-event, and the Cougars took their lead into the final 45 minutes.

The bulk of the afternoon's match was headlined by stifling defense and uneventful offense. Both sides went back and forth, only to be stopped by the backlines, miss the net, or have their shot stopped by goalkeepers Aidan Dumoulin of MRU and Lethbridge's Armaan Thacker.

The Cougars had an excellent opportunity to extend their lead late in the second half when David Schaefer was sprung on a partial break. Sprinting towards the Pronghorns' net, Schaefer fired a shot that narrowly sailed over the crossbar, much like Jonathan Walter's near miss earlier in the contest.

Mount Royal held on for the all-important victory and moved to 9-2-0 through 11 games, holding onto the top spot in the Prairie Division. Lethbridge sits at 3-4-4, which positions them in third place with three games remaining.

The Cougars will head up Highway Two next weekend for a game against the division's second-place team, the Alberta Golden Bears, followed by a match against the MacEwan Griffins. Both games can be streamed live on Canada West TV.
