The University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey club picked up their second win in a row against their crosstown rivals, the Mount Royal University Cougars, with a 4-0 shutout on Saturday night at Flames Community Arena.
Â
Carl Stankowski backstopped the Dinos with a 25 save performance. The Cougars gave
Shane Farkas the start after he made 31 saves during last night's Crowchild Classic at the Saddledome.
Â
"We're preparing for the playoffs and wanted to get Shane back-to-back starts," said
Bert Gilling, MRU's head coach.
Â

Â
Mount Royal forward

In the third, Marty Westhaver parked himself in front of the net again and this time deflected a point shot that fooled Farkas and found twine for a 3-0 score. The Dinos had a stranglehold with under ten minutes to play.
Gricius picked up his second powerplay goal of the game with hard wrister in the slot that lasered past the arm of Farkas. The Colorado Springs, CO local's goal wrapped up the game for the Dinos and they grabbed their 19

MBB: UNBC (96) at MRU (85)
MRU men's basketball split the weekend with the UNBC Timberwolves after an 85-96 loss in their Saturday night match-up.Â
Kevointe Watts and
Holt Tomie had dynamic chemistry on court tonight, propelling the Cougars into the lead after trailing for the first half of the opening quarter. Watts finished the night with 22 points, and four rebounds, shooting 55 per cent from the field.Â
Thomas Teshome was a new face on the floor, with a perfect connection with
Daniel Owoeye. The pair was able to put up back-to-back buckets, with Teshome using his speed and skill to drive the rim before pushing out to Owoeye waiting on the arch and again inside the key.Â
The Cougars managed to spread the love across the team tonight, with nine of 11 players all able to drop numbers for the team.
UNBC was able to put up some impressive statistics of their own with Spencer Ledoux dropping 26 points and six rebounds.
Half time looked a little different in Kenyon Court tonight as MRU women's basketball player, Jaime Lalor, cut twelve inches of her hair off for
breast cancer awareness. Her hair is being donated to Wigs for Kids, along with all money raised for the Canadian Cancer Society. Read more about it
here.Â
MRU went into the second half with a narrow lead, 43-41 over the Timberwolves. The game was played in the paint, with both team's big men putting up the majority of points. Between the two teams, 58 rebounds happened in the first half alone.Â
The third quarter was a close contest, UNBC coming from behind and moving into the lead over the Cougars. By the mid point of the fourth quarter, they had exploded and improved their lead to 10.Â
On both sides of play the physicality had grown, everyone having to press in order to reach the rim and more often than not having the shot miss. Ledoux was the biggest threat, using his height and size to his advantage over a smaller Cougar forward line.Â
Evgeni Baukin also stepped up for the visiting team, adding 13 to the stats sheet. Alongside Baukin was Micah Jesse who had 14 points and 10 rebounds, recording a double-double on the night.Â
An over excited Mount Royal squad couldn't seem to contain themselves, over shooting the steal, but Watts worked to close the lead in the final minute, making three repeated rush lay ups.Â
His efforts weren't enough to help the Cougars in the end, with the Timberwolves taking the game 96-85.Â
They are back next weekend as they take on the Brandon University Bobcats. Watch the game live or on

WBB: UNBC (72) at MRU (56)
The MRU Cougars hosted the UNBC Timberwolves Saturday for their
Shoot For The Cure game, UNBC taking the victory in a intense 72-56 contest.Â
The T-Wolves came quickly out the gate, looking not to repeat their performance from Friday night, and created an early separation on the score sheet. UNBC led by 10 halfway through the first quarter with Mount Royal struggling to find the net.Â
A steal by Madison Hooper, a beautiful bounce pass in the key by Kiana Kerr, and an easy lay-up by Megan Wellinghurt began to bring the Cougars back into the game.
Almost by domino effect, MRU went on a quick six point run before UNBC contested.Â
Jenessa Ramsoomair was all over the key, grabbing every rebound within her reach, both offensive and defensive. Her positioning was a major player in the Cougars redemption.Â
The Cougars clawed back and closed the gap, finishing the first quarter trailing 14-19 behind the Timberwolves.
MRU finally took over the lead with two minutes left in the first half, truly waking up and playing hard pressure defense. But UNBC did not back down, increasing their own level of play to match.Â
The half ended with the Cougars up by four over the visitors.Â
10 seconds into the second half, Lalor ran the court, rushed the rim and pulled an an-one to pull MRU's lead to six.Â
Every second of the third quarter was tense, both teams relentless on the floor. There was no clear leader, with every member of both squads seeing time with the ball in hand. The Timberwolves pushed and regained the lead with three minutes left in the quarter.Â
Adaiah Tupas-Singh was the turning point, with a last second bucket to end the third and reignite the team going into the fourth. UNBC put up seven points within the first minute of the quarter, creating an 11 point lead over the Cougars.Â
Mount Royal was able to bring it close a few times throughout the quarter but were unable to close the gap, with the Timberwolves constantly bringing back their lead. UNBC led by 14 with one minute left to play.
The Timberwolves were determined and unstoppable in their look to redemption, dominating the fourth quarter and taking the game 72-56. Alina Shakirova shone tonight with 20 points on the board, joined by Tupas-Singh, Sveta Boykova and Amrit Manak who all hit double digits.Â
On MRU's side, Lalor and
Tanis Metcalfe hit double digits for points, but Ker earned herself player of the game with her unrelenting drive and positive attitude for all 40 minutes. Ker hit seven points with three steals.Â
