The University of Calgary Dinos defeated the Mount Royal University Cougars 4-2 in the 2023 installment of the men's hockey Crowchild Classic.

Riley Sawchuk opened the scoring for the Cougars and added to his league lead in goals. After a near chance from the Dinos, Sawchuk found space and sniped a shot over the shoulder of Dinos netminder Carl Tetechuk.

"We made a great play in transition. A couple of guys made some nice chips and I shot short-side and it went in for me," said Sawchuk, recounting his goal.

Early in the second period, Dinos forward Jake Gricus tied the game up at one when he beat Cougars goalie Shane Farkas.

The 1-1 score wouldn't last long. Josh Tarzwell found room in the offensive zone and fired a hard wrister past Tetachuk.

50 seconds later, Calgary evened up the score again with a goal from Colson Gengenbach.

Midway through the third, Gengenbach got his second of the game. Riley Stotts fed a steller pass to Gengenbach and the forward shot it past Farkas to give the Dinos their first lead of the game.

The Cougars had multiple chances to tie it up but Carl Tetachuk shut the door on them.

Shane Farkas was called to the bench for an extra attacker in the last few minutes but the Cougars couldn't tie it up.

Colson Gengenbach iced the game off with a hat trick empty net goal to give the Dinos the victory at the Saddledome and their record-breaking 18th win in a row.

MRU and U of C rematch tomorrow at Flames Community Arena at 7 p.m.
