MSOC: TWU (0) at MRU (2)

MRU men's soccer took home six points this weekend after beating the Trinity Western University Spartans, 2-0.

Mount Royal now sits at five consecutive wins for the season, bringing their record up to 6-0-1 for conference play.

The first goal came in the 15th minute of the game from Captain Mohamed El Gandour, with an assist coming from first year defender Alex Kemsley.

Kemsley sent a perfect through ball for El Gandour to pick up on the back side of the Spartans defence before doing what he does best, putting it in the back of the net.

The remainder of the first half was scoreless, giving MRU the edge going into half time.

Trinity Western was awarded an immediate red card half way through the second half after Francis Powell denied a goal scoring opportunity for El Gandour. This allowed the veteran to line up on the penalty spot against TWU goalie, Alexander Cordeiro.

Cordeiro made a miraculous diving save to prevent El Gandour's ball from sneaking inside the left post, but was unable to stop the follow up shot sent in by Skylar Rogers in the 73rd.

This was the first year midfielder's first goal of the season in a Cougars' uniform.

Rogers' goal secured the win but it was Kemsley who was awarded player of the game for Mount Royal.

"Thought the lads played very well," said Kemsley after the win. "It was tough coming off of a good win yesterday but these boys are special and we are buzzing with this win."

On the Spartans side, midfielder Thomas Powell was named player of the game.

Overall MRU had an incredible performance, outshooting TWU 14-7, with 50 per cent reaching Cordeiro.

The men hit the road next weekend, flying to British Columbia where they will take on the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat and the University of Victoria Vikings.

"Well, obviously we've got to enjoy this moment but work hard in the week and hopefully pick up 6 more points next weekend," said Kemsley.

Make sure to catch the games on Canada West TV. 7:15 p.m. start Saturday and a noon start Sunday.

WSOC: UBCO (0) at MRU (2)

The MRU women's soccer team found themselves in an evenly matched battle against the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat this Sunday, taking the win 2-0.

Mount Royal wouldn't find the scoreboard until the 60th minute when Monet Alonso-Cruz found herself in the perfect spot at the top of the box. Alonso-Cruz found herself on the attack after picking up a tough turnover by the Heat, and was able to send a strong ball into the left side of the net.

Two minutes later the Cougars found their second goal of the day. Alexi Watson sent a stunning cross from the right side of the field, going high and long to the far post where Catriona McFadden was waiting. McFadden leapt high and her head connected perfectly to put the ball in behind UBCO goaltender, Molly Race.

Both squads spent the majority of the game in the centre of the pitch, consistently changing possession and goal opportunities for the first half of play.

The second half saw a shift in momentum towards the Cougars, outshooting the Heat 15-3 throughout the game. Lizzy Knight held strong on the goal line while Alexi Watson was unbeatable on defence. To the side of Watson, Stabler also made quite the showing and never let the heat in behind and into a good spot.

UBCO had a strong performance regardless of the stat sheet, with Sophia Pol being named the player of the game for the Heat. The midfielder was a pillar for UBCO, keeping consistent pressure against MRU and repeatedly forcing turnover in favour of her squad.

Catriona McFadden took home the title for the Cougars side. McFadden not only sealed the win for MRU, but she put up six of her team's shots.
"Honestly, that was my old team, so, kind of wanted to have a few of them. It felt good to get one in at least," said McFadden. "It feels so good, yeah we really needed a comeback after yesterday."

This brings Mount Royal's record for the season up to 3-2-1, and drops the Heat to 1-3-2.

"We were really calm on the ball, we were composed, we weren't rushing it, we were switching it side to side, we were keeping it relaxed. It was really good."

The women return to Stadium Field next weekend when they meet the University of Alberta Pandas for a Saturday afternoon kick-off. Catch the game at 1 p.m. here at MRU or online at Canada West TV.

Go Cougars.
