WSOC: LET (2) at MRU (4)
The Mount Royal University women's soccer team reign victorious after their home opener win against the University of Lethbridge tonight at Stadium Field, taking the game 4-2.Â
This brings their record to 2-0 on the season after defeating the Pronghorns on the road last week.Â
MRU brought their intensity from the first whistle, scoring their first goal of the night just 21 minutes in.Â
Sydney Danielewicz chipped the ball over the outstretched body of LET Bridie Harding and into the back right corner of the net after a beautiful pass reception sent over by
Catriona McFadden.Â
It wasn't long before the Cougars were up by two.
Natasha Fourlas jumped high above the heads of Lethbridge's defensive line and connected perfectly with
Bethany Middlemass' corner kick in the 27th.Â
Fourlas was also named player of the game from her teammates tonight. Her confidence and veteran IQ on the field was a necessity in tonight's win, saying the team seems to be connecting well and early.
"I think it was a little bit of a grind at the end but we pushed through and we stayed together and got the win," says Fourlas "I think we just need some more intensity especially against the BC teams that we haven't played before."Â
MRU finished off the half with a goal four minutes after Fourlas when
Monet Alonso-Cruz hammered in an unassisted goal, her first of the 2022-23 season.Â
Lethbridge found their footing in the second 45 after subbing in Rebecca McBride and Kiandra Boulter. McBride was a wall, being a solid assist for Harding while Boulter was the speed and skill needed by the forward line.Â
The change led to a quick goal six minutes in for LET from Mercedes Bourgeois, breathing new life into the squad.Â
They continued to hold off the Cougars for the half, scoring their second and final goal of the night in the 74th minute. Kaleigh Harris battled through the body of
Torrance Langdon, finding her feet goal-side and sending it straight into the middle of the net.Â
MRU rookie Caitlyn Vieira capped off the night with the final goal, assisted by fellow first year
Zyna Centeno. Centeno stripped the ball off the Lethbridge midfield and set it left toward the foot of Vieria. Vieria sent it high over the head of Harding, kissing the crossbar as it bounced down and in.Â
The Cougars go into a week off before traveling to BC for the first time since 2019-20 where they'll take on the University of Fraser Valley. Catch the game live on Canada West TV.
