Mount Royal University took their first game of the weekend in straight sets against the University of Calgary Dinos tonight in Kenyon Court.

The score sheet and the footage tell a different story of what happened tonight in the gym.

The first and third sets were unbelievably close, with the first ending 25-23 for MRU, and the third 26-24. Regardless of the tight score, Mount Royal was dominant and had a commanding force throughout every point.

Madison Marshall had 14 kills for the Cougars, bringing her season total to 133, and with 17 digs her total moves to 122. Quinn Pelland had four kills, nine digs and 27 assists tonight, bringing her assist total to 366.

The second was a clear win for Mount Royal, taking it 25-14. The Dinos struggled to find their footing against the Cougars attack and couldn't come back after falling behind early on in the set.

Nyadholi Thokbuom was also a force to be reckoned with tonight, having 10 kills of her own. But Nicole Bourget was named player of the game tonight, after having her first start of her CW career.

Bourget had six of her total seven kills in tonight's matchup and the first year demonstrated an increase in confidence on the hardwood.

"I know I'm not the biggest player out there and I don't jump the highest but when I see a set of hands I can hit, I try and aim high and hard because you gotta play to your strengths," said Bourget.

The team now sits 10-3 for the season with a 77 win percentage. They head to the Jack Simpson Gym tomorrow night, where they hope to bring their win streak to three.

"I think we just got to bring our energy again. I think the one thing that makes us stand out is even when we are down, we just have so much energy that it just keeps us pushing, keeps us going."

The Mount Royal University Cougars were victorious against the University of Calgary Dinos, 7-2, Saturday night in the annual Crowchild Classic matchup.

Aliya Jomha got MRUs first goal of the game with five minutes left in the first period. Kaia Borbandy attempted to put a puck on net, but a U of C defender blocked it. The bouncing puck ended up on the stick of Jomha in the slot, who released a wrister over the glove hand of Gabriella Durante.

The Cougars had a commanding offense in the second period and put up four goals. From below the goal line, Jomha spotted Anna Purschke in front for the one-timer, 15 seconds into the period.

Courtney Kollman's cross-ice pass to Jomha at the bottom of the left circle put MRU up 3-0 on the power-play.

On an offensive zone rush, Camryn Amundson passed to Lyndsey James who popped the puck over a sprawling Durante. This was Janes first CW career goal.

MRU was able to capitalize on an ill-timed line change by U of C during the man advantage. Kollman and Sydney Benko found themselves all alone in the offensive zone. Benko buried the pass from Kollman giving the Cougars a five zip lead going into the third.

Jodi Hansen-Young released a laser labeled for the left corner from the blue line.

The Dinos scored two goals in the third. Sage Desjardins from behind the goal line got a lucky bounce off a Cougars defender and into the net. Emily Hill, on a power-play walked the blue line and snipped a slap shot into the bottom left corner.

Kollman closed out the scoring for MRU by deeking around a Dinos defender.

The Cougars look to keep up their momentum and finish the season on a high note next weekend against MacEwan University. Puck drop is at 7:00pm at Flames Community Arena. Be sure to catch the game on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.

"It's about putting ourselves in a good spot to get the bye week. The two points matters more than the four," said Jomha. "I don't think we change anything about our game, just keep doing what we're doing. Keep it simple."

MVB: CGY (3) at MRU (1)

The Cougars were defeated by the University of Calgary Dinos in their first matchup of the weekend tonight, three sets to one.

It was truly a game of defence, with long rallies partnered with incredibly powerful attacks from both sides of the net.

Hamish Hazelden and Lincoln Baines were the muscle behind the Dinos offence, with near perfect setups from Liam Kuppe. Hazdelden and Baines combined for an impressive 32 kills, 12 digs and 13 total blocks.

On Mount Royals end, Jacob Van Geel, Luis Lange and Chris Byam were seen repeatedly hammering the ball down into Calgary's zone, completing 38 kills across the three of them. The trio also accounted for 17 digs. Van Geel also made 38 receptions in tonight's game.

But Max Haronga and Griffin Butler were the driving forces behind the MRU men. Haronga made 16 receptions and 11 digs for MRU, and was always in position to reinforce and support his team at the net. Butler had 21 receptions and five digs, but it was his in rally play that won him player of the game tonight.

Butler had consistent and clean passing to any spot his teammates needed around the court. This was just his third time playing on the court for MRU, and he has demonstrated his ability to step up for this squad. It can be safely said that he will be making many more appearances in game.

"I think it was really great on our side. We got to improve a lot," said Butler. "There were a lot of ups and downs, unfortunately there were more downs than ups, but we got lots of work to do and lots of room to improve."

The Cougars will face off against the Dinos tomorrow for their final Crowchild Classic matchup of the 2021-22 regular season.

"We got to bring the energy up and keep it consistent all game long. I think we have the ability to keep going and put pressure on them but we've just got to execute," said Butler.

First service happens tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. in the Jack Simpson Gym at the University of Calgary. Catch the game live across town, or on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.
