The Mount Royal Cougars defeated their Crowchild rivals, the University of Calgary Dinos, 6-1 in a hasty matchup Friday night at Flames Community Arena.
Four minutes into the first period, a beautiful passing play between linemates
Riley Sawchuk and
Nolan Yaremko put the Cougars up 1-0. Yaremko and Sawchuk passed the puck back and forth a handful of times in the slot, confusing Dinos goaltender, Carl Stankowski. Stankowski eventually challenged Yaremko, who got in one more pass to Sawchuk who easily tapped the puck into wide-open cage.
Less than a minute left in the period, MRU doubled their lead. From behind the U of C net, Yaremko spotted
Seth Bafaro at the top of the left circle, who one-timed a slap shot into the bottom right corner.
The Dinos scored their only goal of the game 10 minutes into the second period in a power-play opportunity. Jaeger White released a low wrister hitting off the right pad of
Riley Morris. Riley Stotts picked up the rebound at the bottom of the right circle and found Ryan Graham in front of Mount Royal's net.
Connor Blake dropped back a pass to Sawchuk as he entered the offensive zone. Sawchuk released a wrister through a cluster of bodies beating Stankowski's blocker side, giving MRU a 3-1 lead entering the third.
"Our coaches laid out a plan and we are rolling with it. It's a really good feeling. The job's not done yet but it will be soon," said Sawchuk.
The Cougars added three more goals to the scoreboard in the third period. In his first game back from injury,
Andrew Fyten went end to end and capitalized on a breakaway opportunity.
Kyle Walker scored from the end line and snuck the puck past Stankowski who was hugging his post.
Levi Kleiboer capped off the scoring with a wrister labeled for the top left corner.
MRU has now won seven straight and look to close out the regular season tomorrow night with another win against our city rivals in the Crowchild Classic. Catch the game on
Canada West TV presented by Co-op at 6:00pm.
"We treated 2022 as a fresh start. The guys returning made a real commitment to the team and they've allowed our coaching staff to push them to be better," said head coach
Bert Gilling.
