The Cougars men sweep the weekend after tonight's explosive win, 97-69, over the Grant MacEwan Griffins.
Veteran guard
Holt Tomie put on another incredible performance tonight, shooting an impressive 78 per cent from the field. Not only was he dropping shots from all over the floor, he managed to grab six rebounds and draw four fouls from GMU.
MacEwan made the Cougars battle harder than the night before, outshooting themselves 76 compared to the 73 put up on Friday night.
GMU's Taylor Cook hit a 4-point play in the fourth quarter, bringing a new spark to the squad, but it still wasn't enough to top Mount Royal.
Daniel Mulder started the game throwing one down on the heads of MacEwan's defence, and set the tone for the remainder of play.
Mulder came out the perfect teammate tonight, moving all around the court and finding the ideal moment to redistribute the ball around the arch. He ended the night with 16 points and five rebounds. Mawein Mawein also put up impressive numbers with 11 rebounds, eight coming on defence alone.
But the overall star tonight was first year guard, Ijah Nelson. Nelson had 17 points, seven rebounds, three steals, and even added a block to his sheet.
"I think it was just our communication as a team, we were locked in from the jump, we wanted to win, we wanted to protect our home court," said Nelson, tonight's player of the game.
Scottie Austin was the leader again for MacEwan's squad, with a stacked stat line: 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
The Griffins come back to Calgary next weekend with a 0-4 record when they take on the University of Calgary Dinos, while MRU now sits 3-1 on the season. They head into a bye week with a three game winning streak before hosting the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds on November 25.

The Mount Royal University Cougars men's hockey were victorious against the University of Regina Cougars in a penalty-filled game at Flames Community Arena. MRU defeated Regina 5-3.
Regina forward, Jackson Doucet opened the scoring when he broke away and opened the pads of Riley Sims to give the away team a 1-0 lead.
After a flurry of penalties, MRU found themselves on a two-man advantage. Powerplay quarterback,
Connor Blake tried to fire a cross ice pass, but it ricocheted off a skate and right to Robbie Holmes. Holmes fired it in the open net to tie the game at one.
Midway through the period, MRU starting goalie, Riley Sims had to leave the game due to an apparent injury. Jackson Berry came into the game to replace Sims.
Berry was peppered with shots from Regina immediately. After making a few saves, Regina found a loose puck and squeak it past the Mount Royal goalie.
Josh Tarzwell scored early in the second on the powerplay to tie the game up at two.
Mount Royal shifted the momentum in their favour after Regina had owned the first period. Regina netminder, Curtis Meger was dialed in and kept the game tight.
Late in the period, MRU's star power proved to be the deciding factor.
Nolan Yaremko picked up the puck in the high slot, was stopped on his first attempt but buried his own rebound to give Mount Royal the lead.
After a feisty, chippy and aggressive first period, the game had settled, and MRU had the path to victory.
The third period saw even more penalties. Pushing, shoving and chirping kept the officials and scorekeepers busy tonight.
Spencer Moe found Blake Stevenson on a rush and Stevenson scored to make it 4-2.
Riley Sawchuk then got his own tally for a three-goal lead.
Regina was able to get one back on a powerplay. Randen Schmidt fed a great pass to Ty Barnstable and the Regina forward roofed it.
The game would finish 5-3 for MRU and they took both games in the Cougar showdown.
MRU will host Saskatchewan next weekend. Get tickets

WBB: GMU (71) at MRU (64)
MRU and GMU split the weekend after the Cougars conceded 64-71.
Mount Royal came out similarly to last night but were unable to create the same result against a very hungry Griffin offence.
First year forward, Jenessa Ramsoomair, was a strong point for the Cougars but was completely locked down in the forth quarter, only able to score on a single free throw. She was still able to finish the night with a solid stat line, grabbing eight rebounds and adding 14 points to the board.
Tanis Metcalfe was also a victim of the scouting report tonight as the Griffins consistently double-teamed her in the paint, preventing her normally dominant performance on the floor.
Both teams found themselves tied 10 times throughout the game, with the lead changing seven times before the final whistle.
Four of the five MacEwan starters sunk over 10 tonight, with Mackenzie Farmer at the forefront, dropping 20 and grabbing six. Not far behind Noelle Killbreath managed 19 points herself with two rebounds and two steals.
The final five minutes of play seemingly decided the entire night with both MRU and GMU sitting at 56 points.
MRU trailed by five with two and half minutes to go before
Jordan Blaskin sunk a long three, followed immediately with a steal and textbook layup from teammate Megan Welinghurst to bring it back to a 63-point tie.
It quickly became a defensive battle, with neither team capitalizing for an entire minute of play before the game of fouls began. There would be eight fouls between the two teams in the final 60 seconds, with six of GMUs last eight points scored on free throws.
MRU now heads into a bye week where they will regroup before hosting the UBC Thunderbirds on November 25 in Kenyon Court.
"I think consistency with talking, effort, defence and staying on the same page will help," said tonight's player of the game for MRU, Abbey Wilkinson. "Hopefully next time we can get a sweep."
