The Mount Royal University Cougars women's hockey team took on the Trinity Western Spartans Friday night at Flames Community Arena.
 
Each team came into the contest with a 1-1 record, both eager to post a win.
 
The first period was a tight twenty minutes. Neither team allowed much play to run through the middle of the ice and each shot was eaten up by MRU netminder Kaitlyn Ross and TWU's Mabel Maltais.
 
The Spartans were able to get past the Cougars defence a couple of times but were shut down by Ross, first with the glove and then a spectacular toe save against a breakaway.
 
The second period offered much more offence.
 
Mount Royal broke the scoreless tie with a goal from Tatum Amy. The tally was the captain's second of the year.
 
Not long after, the Cougars found themselves on a partial 3-on-0 that turned into a breakaway for Ava Metzger. Metzger fired a wrist shot under the pad of Maltais to give MRU a 2-0 lead.
 
The Cougars took control of the game with their two quick goals, but TWU got one back to cut the lead. A flurry of shots on a 5-on-3 powerplay led to Chelsea Debusschere burying the loose puck.
 
Spartans' winger Amy Potomak shot one past Kaitlyn Ross and the game was tied once again.
 
Just 17 seconds after TWU tied the game at 2, Cougars forward Courtney Kollman scored right off the faceoff to give the lead back to Mount Royal. The marker was the Calgary native's second of the year.
 
The third period was another tight frame with both goaltenders holding their ground in the blue paint.
 
TWU appeared to score the tying goal, but the officials immediately waved it off due to a high stick.
 
MRU would take this battle with a 3-2 score and move to a 2-1 record.
 
The Cougars women's hockey team will take on the TWU Spartans again for a Saturday afternoon rematch at 3 p.m.
