MAN (2) at MRU (3)
Mount Royal University Cougars women's hockey defeated the University of Manitoba Bisons 3-2 on Friday night at Flames Community Arena.
It was all MRU to start. The Cougars dominated with possession and forced the Bisons to ice the puck whenever possession flipped. Manitoba goalie Meagan Ralf had to be sharp early.
Midway through the frame, Mount Royal went to the powerplay. The Cougars' well-oiled man advantage worked the puck around fluidly. Courtney Kollman ripped a perfect shot short side to beat Ralf and give the home team a 1-0 lead.
MRU added to their lead with just under two minutes to play in the first. First line winger, Aliya Jomha found space in the offensive zone and scored her own top shelf goal.
The Bisons came out of the locker room for the second period with high levels of push back.
A scramble in the Cougars crease led to a loose puck finding the blade of Kate Gregoire and she whacked it past
Kaitlyn Ross to cut the lead to one.
Shortly after, Manitoba broke through the Cougars' neutral zone trap and gained a two-on-one. Jessica Haner slid the puck over to Nora Collins and the Winnipeg native made no mistake to tie the contest up at two.
Heading into the third period, Manitoba had shifted the momentum and the game was up for grabs.
Despite the push back from the Bisons, MRU found twine midway through the third.
Coach
Scott Rivett deployed his top powerplay unit after the Cougars drew a penalty.
Tatum Amy fed an incredible pass cross ice to Courtney Kollman for a wide-open net and Kollman's second of the game.
Kollman's goal proved to be the winner and MRU held on the victory.
The Cougars and Bisons will face off again tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. at Flames Community Arena. Tickets are available
