The MRU Cougars took on Grant MacEwan University Sunday evening at McMahon Stadium, finishing 0-0Â against the Griffins.
It was a close game for the two teams, with big scoring opportunities all game long. The referees let the players play it out, creating high tension between the Cougars and Griffins and making it an exciting game to watch.Â
Â
Starting out in the first half,
Arash Mahjor had a close bicycle kick opportunity, stopped just short of the goal line by GMU goalkeeper Josh Stayko.
Skyler Rogers shot a rocket of a corner kick at Stayko, missing just wide of the net. Rogers also had a free kick, which was stopped just short of a goal.Â
Â
GMU player Rakan Yasssin played strong defense against midfielder
Miguel Da Rocha, working hard to keep the ball away from the opposing team and in his own end. The defence for both teams hustled hard and did not make it easy for the other to get scoring chances.Â
Â
The refs gave out multiple yellow cards during the game. MRU players Dawid Dueck,
Miguel Da Rocha and Jacob Siewert from GMU all received a yellow card for unsportsmanlike behavior, showing how intense the game was. Kelsey Egwu from the Griffins received one for delay restart of game and Ethan Monaghan for descent.Â
Â
MRU goalkeeper
Sterling Kerr played a great game, stopping multiple shots from the Griffins and allowing his team to stay even with the opposition to end in a tie.Â
In the second half,
Ilyich Gharahmadani fired a shot at Stayko, landing right in his gloves as a save.
Samuel Okawa followed close behind, ending in the same result.Â
Â
An injury from Mahjor caused a ruckus on the field, which led to captain
Sterling Kerr getting in the face of an unlucky GMU player. After many whistles, the conflict was resolved and the game played on.
In the end, MRU was unsuccessful in their efforts for a goal, ending in their fourth straight tie and causing them to remain undefeated in regular season play.Â
