The Mount Royal Cougars played the second game of their home opening weekend against the University of Calgary Dinos Saturday night on Kenyon Court, beating them again in three straight sets.

The game seemed to go back and forth all night long, as the Dinos put pressure on the Cougars from the start, making sure there was a body behind every ball they got. In the end, the Cougars were victorious, capturing scores of 25-22, 31-29 and 25-16.

Fifth-year setter Jackson Brennan dominated the assist column tonight, owning 35. Chris Byam led in kills with a whopping 17. Byam also stepped up with a massive party ball to end the second set in the Cougars favor 31-29.

Using the momentum from the close second set win, outside hitter Jacob van Geel had a great night for the Cougars as well, playing under pressure from Dinos fans in the stands and earning himself 11 phenomenal kills and two aces on the floor tonight.

Anders Bouck from the Dinos was making passes left right and center, finishing up with 17 digs for the opposing team, while outside Louis Kuntsman finished with 7 kills in the front row.

The Cougars will play their next games on the road against the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat on October 28 at 7 p.m. and  October 29 at 5 p.m. Catch the game live on Canada West TV.

The Mount Royal University Cougars women's hockey team were defeated the MacEwan Griffins 4-2 at Flames Community Arena on Saturday evening.

Halfway through the first period, a Griffins giveaway to Athena Hauck gave Hauck a point-blank shot in the slot. The Cougars' forward wired it past MacEwan goalie, Brianna Sank, to give MRU a 1-0 lead.

It didn't take long for the Griffins to respond. Robyn Short's point shot was deflected in front by Rylee Gluska and fooled Cougars' netminder, Scout Anderson. A huge goal for the Neepawa, MB native.

Despite MacEwan's excellent forecheck and defensive zone play, the Cougars scored to regain the lead. A point shot was saved by Sank but stayed loose and Laura Cook banged it home.

The Cougars took their 2-1 lead into the second.

Midway through the second frame, Sydney Hughson scored for MacEwan to tie it up once again.

Later in the period, Cougars' forward Allee Gerrard was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for charging Griffins' goalie, Brianna Sank. Sank was shaken up on the play but stayed in the game.

On the ensuing powerplay, Amanda Murray jammed a rebound past Scout Anderson to give MacEwan their first lead of the game.

A few minutes later, the Griffins added to their lead. Hailey Maurice scored her first of the season.

The Cougars pulled Anderson to give themselves and extra skater but were not able to score and the Griffins took this one, 4-2. A heartbreaking defeat for MRU but a well-deserved victory for MacEwan.

The Cougars will host the University of Manitoba Bisons next weekend at Flames Community Arena. Catch the games live by getting tickets here or watch on Canada West TV.

Fueled by a close loss in the previous night's matchup, the University of Calgary Dinos came out with a vengeance on Kenyon Court Saturday night against the Mount Royal University Cougars. Once the Dinos caught their momentum they didn't let up on the gas, defeating the Cougars 3-0 (25-22, 25-22 and 25-30).

At the start of the game, it was tight between MRU and UofC going point-for-point on every rally. Towards the end of the set, the Dinos pulled away with the lead thanks to Sophie Reed's efforts with two kills and three digs, assisting the team with their first set win 25-22.

Despite a renewed energy in the second set that saw Nyadholi Thokbuom and Quinn Pelland capitalize with six and three kills; respectively, the Cougars couldn't hang on to the lead. The Dinos put on the pressure and managed to come out on top of the second set 25-22 again thanks to Reed's five kills.

With momentum, the Dinos continued to forge forward, holding a steady three point lead over the Cougars at all times. At match point where the Dinos were leading 24-22, Reed fittingly finished the game with a kill that was blocked out of bounds by MRU.

Up next the Cougars travel to the University of British Columbia Okanagan to take on the Heat on Friday, Oct. 28 at 5 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 29 at 3 p.m. Catch all the action live on Canada West TV.

After a snowy turn of events, The Mount Royal men's soccer team had to overcome low roofs at the Foothills Performance Center Saturday afternoon when their home game against the University of Alberta Golden Bears was canceled due to heavy snow on Stadium Field. The men played a strong defensive game this afternoon, finishing with a 0-0 tie against Alberta.

The Golden Bears and the Cougars had it out during the 90 minutes of play, battling back and forth for possession and playing a very physical game.

During the first half, both teams played a defensive game, not allowing for many breakthroughs in the offensive zone for either team. Miguel Da Rocha and David Schaefer had the only two shots for MRU. Schaefer also earned himself a yellow card in the first 45 for a delayed restart of play.

Goalkeeper Sterling Kerr played a great game, stopping four shots for the Cougars despite Alberta's best efforts.

For the Golden Bears, David Chung earned himself five shots while his teammate Eric Gehlert had 2, one almost passing through the hands of Kerr to capture the win.

MRU head coach Ryan Gyaki made many substitutions in the second half, trying to generate a goal to break the tie, but his efforts were unsuccessful and the game stayed locked at 0.

Jonathan Walter was a stand-out player tonight as well, pressuring the opponent for the full 90 minutes and staying strong while on the ball. First-year player Alex Kemsley was another asset, especially in the defensive end, holding off the opponents from their multiple scoring chances.

The men will play their next game against the Grant MacEwan Griffins tomorrow evening at McMahon Stadium starting at 5:30 p.m. Catch the game live or on Canada West TV.
