The Mount Royal University Cougars women's hockey team defeated the University of Calgary Dinos 2-1 in thrilling fashion on Saturday night.
Following a 6-1 game last night, the first period saw both teams not willing to give their opponent a break. MRU managed a few chances, but Dinos' goaltender Gabrielle Durante shut the door at the few scoring chances.
Durante's solid play was the only notable display from Calgary in the first. It took over fifteen minutes for the Dinos to register their first shot on goal.
Both clubs did an excellent job keeping the play to the outside; the Cowtown rivals headed to the locker room scoreless.
Kaitlyn Ross saw her first real test. The Dinos had a couple of point-blank chances in front, but Ross turned them aside. Although tested sparsely, Ross showed no signs of weakness when tested.
Both teams looking for an edge saw more penalties called.
While 4-on-4, MRU finally broke the ice.
Emma Bergesen rifled her patented slap-pass to the stick of
Camryn Amundson. Amundson redirected it over the shoulder of Durante to give Mount Royal the 1-0 lead.
With seconds remaining in the period,
Courtney Kollman blocked a shot off that hand that looked to sting bad. The block was huge for MRU to finish the period up by one.
The Cougars took a costly penalty in the third. Battling behind the net, Dino forward, Alli Borrow caught Ross going the other way, and banged the puck across the line.
All signs pointed to overtime but with just 9.6 seconds remaining in the third, the Cougars threw the puck towards the net and managed to sneak one past Durante.
Tatum Amy was given credit for the goal.
The goal would be the game winner and the Cougars would take this edition of the Crowchild Classic 2-1.
The Cougars will take on the MacEwan Griffins next Friday in Edmonton. Don't miss the game and watch live on
Canada West TV.

The Mount Royal University Cougars extended their record to 7-5-1 after defeating the University of Winnipeg Wesmen in a 3-1 match Saturday afternoon.
MRU started strong with a goal in the fifth minute by
Catriona McFadden, going bar down after grabbing the ball from a Winnipeg turnover, firing it into the right side.
The Wesmen prevented any more opportunities in the first half with impressive defence and tallied one for themselves in the 34th minute from Sydney Butler.
Butler collected a long ball that was sent into the Cougars end and was able to gain control, creating a one-on-one battle with
Lizzy Knight. She sent the ball into the left side of the goal from 15 yards out, finishing the half even between both squads.
Cougars midfield
Jordan Grundl brought the lead back immediately at the start of the second, scoring in the 45th minute. Grundl took a stunning free kick from the top of the Wesmen box, sending it high over their defence and goalkeeper to find the back of the net. Not only did she score the game winning goal, but this was her first of the season.
It was clear the Wesmen were hungry for a win today, showing constant pressure and high energy against Mount Royal and truly making them work for their win.
Emma Friesen and Butler were leaders for WPG, combining to make seven of the team's 15 shots, Friesen impressively putting every single attempt on goal. But Madison Priebe was what kept Winnipeg alive with a 75 per cent save average, making 12 huge saves for the team.
Catriona McFadden scored the third and final goal for the team in the 80th minute, followed by an eruption of cheers from the Mount Royal bench.
But the Cougars had strong performances from all over the field that sealed the deal. Four MRU women put up three or more shots against WPG goalie, Madison Priebe, while the entire team had 15 of 23 shots making it to the goal.
Following today, MRU goes into tomorrow's match against Manitoba with a nearly guaranteed spot in CW playoffs.
MAN sits 6-6-1 on the season after winning 1-0 in their match against the University of Lethbridge.
The Bisons and Cougars take Stadium Field tomorrow at 1 p.m. for MRUs final home game of the season for women's soccer.
Make sure to catch the game live on campus or on
Canada West TV.
