The Mount Royal University women's hockey team defeated the University of Alberta Pandas 4-1 on Saturday night.
Â
The game started off very tight, with neither team giving an inch. After going on the powerplay,
Courtney Kollman got one past Pandas' netminder Halle Oswald to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
Â
The officials were calling a tight game as both teams experienced many trips to the box. Special teams were a big contributor to how this contest went.
Â
"Two great teams were going at it tonight; certainly, some emotions get the better of both teams at different times in the game," said Cougars' head coach
Scott Rivett. "I thought we did a pretty good job at maintaining our composure and staying disciplined."
Â
The Pandas were able to apply some pressure, but Cougars goalie
Kaitlyn Ross shut the door on ALB.
Â
After going on another powerplay,
Emma Bergesen scored immediately with a blast from the point. The tally from Bergesen was a huge momentum shift for MRU.
Â
In the third period,
Aliya Jomha slid one past Oswald to push the game further out of reach.
Â
Midway through the period, the Pandas finally got one past Ross with a deflection from a point shot. After deliberation from the officials, it was determined that the puck was hit with a high stick and the call on the ice was overturn and the game remained 3-0.
Â
Emma Bergesen added an empty netter for MRU with just under three minutes to play.
Â
ALB were able to break the shutout bid for
Kaitlyn Ross. A hard point shot from Taylor Kezama riffled over Ross' shoulder. It wasn't enough for the Pandas and the game finished with a dominant 4-1 win for the Cougars.
