Mount Royal University Cougars caused a massive upset Saturday night in women's basketball after defeating the undefeated University of Alberta Pandas, 80-79.

The Pandas sat 8-0 going into tonight's match up, and seemed as if they were to continue their streak at the end of the first half of play. ALB led MRU 39-28, at one point ahead by 12.

Half town found a new energy for this Cougars squad. Within the first five minutes of the third quarter they had brought the score to a 40 point tie, and would finish the quarter 58-56 over the Pandas.

Jamie Lalor saw her best USPORT performance tonight, putting up 18 points on the scoreboard while making five steals and five assists. Her defensive performance was just as impressive, as the five foot seven guard was able to snatch three rebounds.

"We talked about executing our offence and making sure we keep getting the right people, the right looks from the right places and just being aggressive on defence," said Lalor. "I think in the second quarter, second half actually, we came out pretty hard and we rebounded hard and defended hard and that was very beneficial for us."

Lalor was named player of the game for her efforts, saying "it was a great game at the end there."

Rachel Osczevski was also making a mark for herself on the hardwood, putting up a consistent and strong performance under the rim. Osczevski made 10 rebounds and 9 points, narrowly missing a double-double.

Like Osczevski and Lalor, Jenika Martens showed up at Kenyon Court ready to play this evening. Martens was a driving force behind the Mount Royal offence, powering into the key and using her physical play style to either create space around the arch for her teammates, or provide herself lay up options.

Martens added 15 points of her own to the stat sheet tonight, and nine of the team's 45 rebounds.

With the Cougars performing they way they did tonight, this is bound to be an electric semester of basketball. Robyn Fleckenstein's coaching seemingly transformed this squad overnight and continuously motivates them to keep a high energy level for all 40 minutes of play.

MRU hosts Calgary next weekend for their second weekend of home games back-to-back. The Crowchild Classic tip-off happens at 6 p.m. in Kenyon Court next Friday. Make sure to come out for the game or catch it live on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.

MBB: ALB (84) at MRU (61)

The University of Alberta Golden Bears continue their undefeated streak tonight, after winning 84-61 over the Mount Royal University Cougars.

MRU had a promising start to tonight's game, at one point leading by 10 after a seven point scoring run.

Neither team seemed to be lucky through the first 20 minutes, with Mount Royal only shooting 39 per cent, while Alberta hit 32 per cent.

The first half finished with a 31-30 lead for the Cougars, but the second half was where the Golden Bears found their rhythm.

"I mean we showed all four games that we can compete with them, we just can't let off the gas pedal. One six-0 run we just kind of hang our heads. It turns into an 18-five run," said MRU player of the game, Dylan Lutes. "Gotta find a way to run into the storm. But we know we can do it so just gotta watch the tape back and figure out the little things."

Lutes put up 15 points, five rebounds and shot 60 per cent from the field in tonight's game.

"Yeah they're undefeated and they're top ranked in the country but we don't really think they're any better than we are so that's why it's frustrating," said Lutes. "But, I don't know, we just gotta stick together and stay positive I guess. Good chance we see them in the playoffs so, we'll beat them then.

Holt Tomie also had a strong performance on behalf of the squad tonight, having matched Lutes with 15 points, but grabbing nine rebounds.

Both men consistently drove strong into the paint and worked to create better scoring opportunities for the Cougars.

MRU plays their Crowchild Classic rivals, the University of Calgary Dinos, next weekend at Kenyon Court. Catch tip-off live at 8 p.m., or on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.
