The Mount Royal Cougars men's basketball team fell flat tonight against the University of Alberta Golden Bears, losing 57-67 in Kenyon Court.Â
The Golden Bears win was seemingly a team affair, with stats spread evenly across seven of the men making up their roster. Geoffrey James led his team on the scoreboard, adding 12 points for the team. Another three players had nine points apiece.Â
Colton Gibb, Abdullah Shittu and Adam Paige covered the paint, with six, nine and seven rebounds respectively.Â
The Cougars had a solid night on the stats sheet as well, with both
Holt Tomie and
Nate Petrone with 17 points each, with Holt also having six rebounds.Â
Captain
Nick Tancon stole the show and led the game under the rim, grabbing 14 rebounds.Â
It was third year guard
Matt Fullerton who came out of tonight named player of the game. The Calgary native had the consistency necessary to keep his team calm in what was otherwise a fast-paced and high intensity game, regardless of the low score.Â
"I think both teams did a really good job of contending. Moving into tomorrow, our guys that are normally stroking the ball will and I think that will be the difference in the game tomorrow. Besides that, overall I congratulate our guys on how hard they played," said Fullerton.
He spent the game focusing on ball movement to open men around the arch to create the optimal scoring opportunities. Despite being the smallest man on the court, standing at five foot eight, he was able to grab three rebounds and put up seven points for the men.Â
"It was a pretty low scoring half. I applaud our guys on how hard we played on defence," said Fullerton. "We took away a lot of the things that normally they are good at and like I said, it was pretty solid defence overall by our guys."
MRU, sitting third in the central division, will rematch against the undefeated and number one ranked U of A Golden Bears tomorrow night in Kenyon Court, starting at 6 p.m. Catch the game live or on
Canada West TV presented by Co-op.Â

The Mount Royal University women's basketball team put on an impressive performance tonight as they were narrowly defeated by the number one rank University of Alberta Pandas, 58-60.Â
It wasn't until the second half that tonight's battle truly took life and the Cougars were able to close an eight point lead held by the Pandas.
"I think just focusing on their top two players. Making someone else beat us essentially," said
Abbey Wilkinson, tonight's player of the game for MRU. "I think we did a pretty good job of that and at half time we had a little spark of energy."
Wilkinson, a first year guard from Calgary, Alta, was the driving force behind the team. She was able to shoot 46 per cent from the field against an impressive Alberta defence, putting up 13 points. She was also a powerhouse in the Cougars' end, making three defensive rebounds and making six steals for the women.Â
"It's hard work being out there playing against the toughest team in the province so I think we gave a good effort so hopefully we can get 'em tomorrow," said Wilkinson.Â
Jenika Martens and
Tanis Metcalfe both made excellent stats this evening. Martens made 11 points and five steals, while having a necessary and aggressive presence in the paint grabbing nine rebounds.Â
Metcalfe was the shooter MRU needed to be a contender in the game, making 60 per cent from the field and scoring 13 points. Her abilities also transferred to her defensive performance, with six rebounds.Â
Even with U of A taking the game, Mount Royal dominated when scoring off turnovers. The Cougars made an impressive 31 points in comparison to the Pandas' 11.Â
MRU held the lead half way through the fourth, forcing the victory to the final seconds. Emma Kary scored the final bucket of the night for Alberta with 1 minute remaining. Kary was a leader for Alberta, scoring 12 points and making eight rebounds for her team. The final sixty seconds were a battle underneath the rim.Â
The final shot was taken by Wilkinson, taking the ball just over half and firing a hail mary long shot going just wide of the basket.Â
The Cougars now sit 2-9 for the season while the Pandas remain undefeated, 8-0 with three games postponed from earlier this year.Â
There will be a rematch tomorrow night in Kenyon Court, with a 4 p.m. tip off. Catch the game live or at
Canada West TV present by Co-op.
