The Cougars women's volleyball team extended their win streak to six after defeating the MacEwan University Griffins 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-23).

Tonight's victory puts the Cougars at 18 straight sets without a single loss.

The Cougars continued their dominance from last night's performance through the first two sets of play, with 60 per cent on attack in the second set alone. MacEwan stepped up in the third with a hard press against the vicious MRU offence, pushing the set to a 25-23 close.

Haley Roe led Mount Royal on the score sheet with 10 kills and two service aces, followed closely behind by Madison Marshall with nine kills of her own.

"I think we needed to come out strong again like we did last night, and I feel like we did that," said Roe. "We talked about how no matter what we have to respect who's over there. They played way better tonight and it showed."

Roe was named tonight's player of the game, and rightfully so after being a strong and consistent presence at the net. She put up two massive blocks tonight and managed to capitalize more than once on strategic pushes down onto GMU's side rather than hammering a hard hit into a wall. This court vision allowed her to finish the game with a 60 per cent attack average and only one error through the night.

Both teams finished even in blocks tonight, with 10 team blocks a piece and only one recorded solo block.

The Griffins were led by first year middle, Sarah McGee. McGee stepped up for her team, making five kills and four blocks to keep GMU in the match.

With this, MRU moves to a 8-2 record while MacEwan remains winless so far this season.

GMU will host the University of Calgary Dino's next weekend with a 6 p.m. game time.

Mount Royal will head up to Edmonton and face their division rivals for the second time this season, the University of Alberta Pandas. The Cougars hope to continue their win streak and end the Pandas perfect season.

"We just need to do what I know we can do. We've shown it tonight and last night that we can compete," said Roe.

Catch the Cougars live on Canada West TV presented by Co-op at 6 p.m. January 28.

The Mount Royal University Cougars truly had it together in today's match against the Grant MacEwan University Griffins, taking the game in three straight sets (25-17, 25-21, 25-23).

At the head of MRU's offence was Jacob Van Geel. He played a near perfect game, scoring 14 kills with only one error. Across the two games weekend, Van Geel made a total 31 kills, five assists and 14 digs.

Mount Royal started the game strong, changing up what is normally a hard hitting offence to a more strategic style of play. Almost every member of the Cougars squad was able to capitalize and score off small pushes over the tape and into the Griffins court.

GMU was able to reorganize going into the second set, with second year Jefferson Morrow at the helm. Morrow put up 10 kills and seven digs, keeping the Griffins alive and bringing the final two sets to a back and forth battle until the end.

The second set saw a picture perfect play by the Cougars men. The team had a 50 per cent attack average, and ended the game with 45 kills on 96 total attacks, only erroring 14 times.

Tonight also saw impressive performances from Chris Byam and Keal Prince. Byam did what he does best, hammering down a massive 17 kills tonight while Prince was dominant as a setter. Prince made 36 assists, eight digs, one service ace, and stuck three kills of his own into the opposing side.

This squad brought a new energy into this evening's match, demonstrating strong communication and beautiful flow on the hardwood. Every offensive possession either resulted in a promising attack or in a kill to add one to the scoreboard.

"It's a lot less stressful getting out of here in three not four," said Van Geel, named tonight's player of the game. "Yesterday was a little close but it feels good to get a sweep in."

MRU hits the road next weekend with a two-game win streak to their name, as they face the number one team in Canada West. The team is hoping to slow the game down and maintain their composure when playing the University of Alberta Golden Bears.

Tune in live to the game at 6 p.m. on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.

MHCKY: REG (1) at MRU (5)

The Mount Royal Cougars defeated the University of Regina Cougars 5-1 in a high tension, penalty-filled matchup Saturday afternoon at Calgary Flames Community Arena.

The game's first goal was scored just over two and a half minutes into the first period by Regina. Tyler Adams drove up the right side boards dangling his way around an MRU defender. The rebound from Adams' shot was picked up by Tanner Sidaway and tucked under the pads of Riley Morris.

A power-play goal by Riley Sawchuk tied up the game midway through the second period. Connor Blake sent a saucer pass cross-ice onto the tape of Sawchuk's stick, who was at the top of the left circle. Sawchuk rifled a wrister over the glove of Curtis Meger.

A few minutes later, from below the goal line, Ryley Lindgren found Ethan Regnier, who redirected the pass into the net, giving MRU their first lead.

In the third period, Brad Kennedy scored all three cougar goals, getting his first hat trick of the season. Two of Kennedys' goals were on the man advantage. He scored in a similar fashion by parking himself in front of the blue paint and tipping in a pass from teammates Jared Power, Nolan Yaremko, and Kyle Walker.

"It feels pretty good, I haven't scored in a few games so to get three in the third feels good," said Kennedy.  "I'm playing with pretty good line mates and if I'm in front if the net on the power-play I think I got  chance to score a lot of goals."

The Cougars look to carry on this two-game win streak into next weekend's matchup on the road against MacEwan University. Be sure to catch Friday night's game on Canada West TV presented by Co-op at 7:00pm.
