CALGARY, ALTA -
Tatum Amy, a veteran student-athlete of the Cougars women's hockey team, has been named to a two-year pilot mentorship program newly formed by U SPORTS and the Hockey Canada Foundation. The program, Creating Coaches, is designed to increase the number of women in coaching positions in Canada with a focus on training, mentorship and empowering women.
"This investment in our veteran women's hockey student-athletes will allow them to thrive as they begin their development behind the bench," Lisette Johnson-Stapley, U SPORTS Chiefs Sport Officer said. "We look forward to watching them on their journey as they inspire the next generation of girls playing hockey."
"I feel very honoured to be selected for this program," Amy said. "I'm looking forward to observing different deliveries and practice methods from various coaches and staff members. Learning and being involved with different coaching and playing styles will not only benefit me in the development of my future career but will translate well for me as a leader on our team."
"Tatum has a bright mind for the game and will transition seamlessly to the coaching ranks,"
Scott Rivett, Cougars Women's Hockey Head Coach said. "This is a fantastic opportunity for her to learn from some of the best people in the game."
Amy, a health and physical education student majoring in physical literacy, hails from Birtle, Manitoba and is in her fourth year of U SPORTS eligibility with the Cougars. Through 92 career games with the Cougars, Amy has amassed 37 points (12G-25A).
"On behalf of Cougars Varsity Athletics, we would like to congratulate Tatum for being selected to the athlete-to-coach mentorship program as a representative of Mount Royal University," Rob Godfrey, Manager, Varsity Athletics said. "We commend U SPORTS and the Hockey Canada Foundation for creating an opportunity to continue growing women's hockey and we could not be more proud of Tatum. She is a fantastic student-athlete and a leader within our department."
Along with her hockey and educational responsibilities, Amy is also the Mount Royal University Cougars Athletic Board (CAB) President where she and other students aim to elevate the MRU student-athlete experience through culture building, community involvement, leadership and inclusivity.
