The Mount Royal University women's volleyball team had a dominant performance tonight against their cross town rivals the University of Calgary Dinos.
MRU was able to sweep CGY in straight sets for the second time this weekend (25-22, 25-10, 25-21).

Quinn Pelland demonstrated why she was named captain of the Cougars in tonight's match up, making two kills, 30 assists, three service aces, four digs and two blocks. Pelland was also named player of the game for the women's team.

"We were honestly just trying to focus on our side and what we were doing and just working on communication and recognizing that we have a really good opponent on the other side," said Pelland. "It feels really good [to win], ending the season on a good note."

Pelland was not the only powerhouse on the Cougars bench tonight. Madison Marshall carried her winning mentality and momentum from last night's win into today's performance. Marshall made 11 kills for the team, along with 12 digs.

After tonight's win, Marshall and Pelland have demonstrated they are undoubtedly leaders on the court, but they are also leaders on the stats sheet. Marshall leads MRU in kills and service aces for the fall semester, while Pelland leads in digs and assists for the women.

This dynamic duo is expected to do great things in the upcoming winter semester.

"[Marshall]'s just on the ball all the time," said Pelland. "It was pretty easy to work with our team and she's pretty easy to talk to so we sort things out pretty quick when we're having troubles. Just great communication."

Catch the women back in action January 21 as they host Grant MacEwan University Griffins for their first game following the winter break, here in Kenyon Court. Catch the game on Canada West TV presented by Co-op or live in the Cougar's den.

The Mount Royal University Cougars kept the University of Saskatchewan Huskies off the scoresheet for the second night in a row, beating them 1-0 their last game before the winter break Saturday night at Calgary Flames Community Arena.

MRU had an impressive first period on both sides of the puck, getting 11 shots on goal and keeping their opponents pinned in their end for most of the first 20 minutes. The Cougars also did a phenomenal job of back-checking, causing the huskies to turn over the puck and blocking shots multiple shot attempts, only allowing one shot on goal.

The puck went to Laura Cook who's shot was blocked after a faceoff win in the offensive zone. The rebound bounced right to Tianna Ko, who slid the puck through the five-hole of Camryn Drever. This would be the only goal of the game.

The Huskies came into the third period looking to tie things up. They spent the majority of the period on the attack with three power-play opportunities. Saskatchewan came close to tying it all up with a shot that rang off the right post. MRU maintained their one-goal lead for the rest of the game and came out with a win, sweeping the Huskies in the weekend match-up.

Nothing could get past Kaitlyn Ross tonight as she stopped 19 shots, getting her first shutout of the season.

The Cougars head into the winter break without letting a goal in, in the past 120 minutes of play. The next match-up is an exhibition game at home against the University of Alberta Pandas on January 7, 2022 at 7:00pm. Catch the game on Canada West TV presented by Coop.

In a tough rematch, the Mount Royal University Cougars conceded 3-0 to the University of Calgary Dinos (25-21, 25-23, 25-9).

During the first two sets of play, the Cougars kept the pressure high against the Dinos, forcing them to go point-for-point.

MRU seemed to have strong on court chemistry for the majority of the game, but couldn't maintain their momentum following the second set loss.

Calgary locked focus and played perfect defence in the third set, refusing a single kill from Chris Byam, Luis Lange and Jacob Van Geel. All three men went into the set having strong statistics but were unable to capitalize against Calgary's wall.

Byam was able to make eight kills in the first two sets with five digs. Lange and Van Geel boasted similar stats, with Lange making six kills while Van Geel made five.

Leading the Dinos was Hamish Hazelden, continuing a strong performance from Friday night's game. He put up 15 kills, nine digs and three blocks in tonight's game for U of C. His teammates Erik Godwin and Parker Siroishka added 11 each to the teams 47 total kills.

With a split weekend, the Cougars head into the winter break with a chance to regroup and refocus before meeting the Grant MacEwan University Griffins at home on January 21. Come down the Kenyon Court to catch all the action live or tune in to the game on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.
