The Mount Royal University Cougars women's volleyball team defeated the University of Calgary Dinos in straight sets tonight at Kenyon Court (29-27, 25-22, 25-14).

The game started strong from the first serve. The teams seemed evenly matched as the entire set went point-for-point.

Madison Marshall proved to be an important asset tonight for MRU, as she made 11 kills, four service aces and 10 digs.

The team had undeniable chemistry on the court tonight, battling for every point. The first set only came to a close after going into extra points. The Cougars were finally able to claim the set after Haley Roe and Quinn Pelland brought the team to advantage, letting Marshall finish after an attack error by CGY's Sophie Reed.
Marshall was named MRU player of the game, but wasn't the only Cougar with an impressive stat line. Roe was able to make 13 kills for the team, with seven digs and a service ace for herself.

Calgary didn't let Mount Royal get too comfortable at any point during the match. From the first rally, the teams went back-and-forth on the scoreboard. For every kill made by MRU, U of C was ready to retaliate and tie the score.

U of C made its mark with Regan Ingram who contributed nine kills for the Dinos and was a constant threat in the game. Her calm composure on defence shut down repeated and powerful attacks from MRU. She was also named Calgary's player of the game.
It wasn't until the third set that MRU finally settled into their rhythm and took off.

The Dinos had a promising start to the set, leading MRU 4-1. The game stayed neck-n'-neck until Mount Royal was able to create distance on the stats sheet. The Cougars made their largest lead of the night, being up 20-11 over the Dinos.
The women only conceded three more points to Calgary before the game came to a close with the Cougars claiming victory.

Mount Royal and U of C will face off again for their second Crowchild Classic matchup of the weekend, tomorrow night at Kenyon Court following the men.

WHCKY: SSK (0) at MRU (1)

The Mount Royal University Cougars shut out the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 1-0 in a fast-paced matchup Friday night at Calgary Flames Community Arena.

The Cougars scored the game's only goal on a powerplay opportunity 11 minutes into the first period. Emma Bergesen sent a cross-ice pass along the blue line to Tatum Amy, who unleashed a wrister that found its way into the top left corner of the net. The Huskies goalie, Camryn Drever, could not track the puck as she was screened.

Both teams had multiple opportunities in the second and third period but could not capitalize on their chances, resulting in a scoreless 40 minutes. MRU and U of S had their fair share of powerplays resulting in prolonged periods in the offensive zone and multiple scrambles in front of the net.

Both goalies had an outstanding performance tonight, keeping it a close game from the very beginning. Zoe De Beauville was a brick wall tonight for MRU, stopping all 28 shots and getting her third shutout of the season. Drever saved 24 of 25 shots keeping her team in the game.

The Cougars look to take this momentum into tomorrow night's rematch against the Huskies at 6:00pm at Calgary Flames Community Arena. Be sure to catch the game on Canada West TV presented by Coop

MVB: CGY (2) at MRU (3)

The University of Calgary Dinos travelled across town to face their Crowchild Classic rivals, the Mount Royal University Cougars, in Kenyon Court.

CGY lost to the Cougars after five sets of play, taking the game 3 sets to 2 (17-25, 25-23, 25-21, 17-25, 11-15).

Every set was a battle on the court, with each team exchanging impressive hits and putting up solid blocks.

The game saw diving into crowds, repeated pancake saves, and sprints to save balls on the outs. It was impossible to hear what was going on with the crowd erupting after each Cougar point.

MRU started the game with a quick win, Chris Byam giving the Dinos a taste of what was to come for the remaining four sets.

Byam was able to put up 26 kills, six service aces, five digs and four blocks to help the team claim their first win of the weekend.

Byam was named player of the game for the Cougars. Not only were his stats impressive, his on court presence was a necessity in the team's success tonight. He was able to work seamlessly with his teammates, and predict the next play consistently. He was seen repeatedly being a step ahead of the Dinos and found himself in the perfect positions.

The Dinos had their own superstar appearance during the game. Hamish Hazelden was a force to be reckoned with and a problem for the Cougars. Hazelden put up 29 kills on 25 team attacks, being the on court leader CGY needed in the tough match.

The team's will face off again tomorrow afternoon with a 4 p.m. serve reception. Make sure to catch the game live at Kenyon Court or on Canada West TV presented by Co-op
