On Saturday afternoon, the University of Manitoba Bisons defeated the Mount Royal University Cougars 2-1 in overtime at Calgary Flames Community Arena.
MRU dominated the first two periods of play offensively by maintaining the majority of puck possession and having 19 shots on goal. However, the first two periods of the game were scoreless.
The afternoon's first goal came just under four minutes into the third period on a two-on-one opportunity between
Athena Hauck and
Taylor Sawka. Hauck rushed up the right side boards passing the puck to Sawka, who dangled her way around the University of Manitoba goalie, Kimberley Davidson, sliding the puck under her right pad and into the net.
The turning point of the game occurred when a double minor was assessed to Hauck for head contact against a Bison at centre ice along the right sideboards. Manitoba took advantage of this opportunity tying the game with 15 seconds left in the third period. Molly Kunnas released a wrister from the top of the left faceoff circle, beating
Zoe De Beauville. The double minor against Hauck continued into overtime.
The Cougars started overtime on the penalty-kill. Just over a minute in, Trechelle Bunn scored the game-winning goal after receiving a cross-ice pass from Rachel Gottfried. Bunn walked in unleashing a laser into the top right corner.
MRU's next game is December 3rd against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies at 7:00pm at Calgary Flames Community Arena. Catch the game on
Canada West TV presented by Co-op.
