The Mount Royal University Cougars defeated the MacEwan University Griffins 7-1 in a dominating offensive performance Friday night at the Calgary Flames Community Arena.
The game's first goal was scored just over a minute into the first period by
Ethan Regnier. A wrister from between the two faceoff circles beat the screened MacEwan goalie, Ty Taylor, over the right shoulder.
The Griffins responded just over halfway through the first, tying the game up 1-1. Curtis Roach walked his way in from above the right faceoff circle, dangling around
Riley Sims, who had come out of the crease to challenge Roach.
The Cougars capitalized on a power-play opportunity 45 seconds into the second period.
Nolan Yaremko buried his own rebound under the glove of Taylor to put MRU up 2-1. This would ignite the Cougars' scoring spree as they would go on to score five unanswered goals.
Riley Sawchuk sent a cross-ice pass to
Brad Kennedy, waiting in the left faceoff circle all alone. Kennedy one-timed the pass over the blocker of Taylor.
An end-to-end play by
Kyle Walker put the Cougars up 4-1. Walker carried the puck from his own zone, dangling around two MacEwan players, finding himself all alone in front where he tucked the puck off the right post and in. This goal ended Taylors night as he allowed four goals on 21 shots.
MRU added three more goals in the third. A slap shot from
Levi Kleiboer on the right point beat James Porter clean over the glove side.
Lane Gilliss cleaned up a juicy rebound in front, roofing the puck over a stretched-out Porter attempting to cover it up. The final goal of the night was a two-on-one opportunity between Sawchuk and Yaremko. Yaremkno one-timed his pass from Sawkchuk into the wide open net.
MRU looks to take this momentum into tomorrow night's game against the University of Alberta Golden Bears at 6:00pm. Catch the game on

The number one ranked Golden Bears took the first two sets 25-21 and 25-20 against the Cougars, but MRU was able to hold their own throughout the match.

Max Haronga.
Haronga added six kills for MRU, but
Chris Byam stole the show after claiming 15 kills on his own along with 17 points and four digs.

MRU's player of the game,
Jackson Brennan has set the tone for his fifth season, getting 26 assists and five digs for the boys.
