On Saturday night, the University of Calgary Dinos shut out Mount Royal University Cougars 1-0 at the 7 Chiefs Sportsplex.
Before the game, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls were honoured with a ceremonial puck drop between Tsuu T'ina Nation Councilman Steven Crowchild and Rob Godfrey, manager of Cougar Athletics. As part of commemorating Sisters in Spirit, four red dresses were hung beside the MRU bench.
The Cougars spent the majority of the first period on the attack with 16 shots on goal and a two-minute five on three powerplay opportunity but were unable to capitalize. The game remained scoreless after 20 minutes of play.
In the second period, the Dinos had the edge offensively, applying pressure to the Cougars with ten shots on goal, putting MRU goalie
Kaitlyn Ross to the test after a lowkey first period of only four shots on goal. The game remained scoreless entering the third period.
U of C scored the game's only goal on a four on three powerplay nine minutes into the third. Elizabeth Lang shot a wrister from the left point, hitting the pads of Rpss right to Holly Reuther, who put home the rebound.
Both goalies had a phenomenal night. Ross stopped 18 of 19 shots and Gabriella Durante got her first Canada West shut out, facing 34 shots on goal.
MRU looks to redeem themselves next Friday night on the road against MacEwan at 7:00pm. Catch the game on

Bella Gaulden made her mark today, putting up 15 points, 2 steals and 2 rebounds while playing an aggressive game that set the tone for the MRU victory.
The game kicked off on a quicker note with both teams putting the pressure on and forcing the other side to battle for each point.

MBB: GMU (68) at MRU (85)
The men's basketball team found themselves victorious over the MacEwan Griffins for the second time this weekend at Kenyon Court today. MRU defeated GMU 85 - 68 in a fast paced game filled with beautiful ball movement.
Chase Bohne took home the player of the game title after putting up 13 points with three rebounds and three steals. His work on the court was like watching poetry in motion as he was able to consistently feed the ball into the perfect spots and allowing the Cougars to create quality scoring opportunities.
Bohne wasn't the only Cougar with a notable performance tonight. The team together was able to catch 46 rebounds and make 17 points off of MacEwan turnovers. Leading the rebounds was
Patrick Vandervelden,
Lincoln Anderson and
Holt Tomie who combined for 22. The three men also combined for 35 points, 12 of which came from beyond the arch.
The Griffins were also able to put up an impressive stat line tonight, with Matthew Osunde giving the team 13 points and eight rebounds while Milan Jaksic got 14 points and six rebounds.
But the GMU player of the game went to Marco Correas who's heart and hustle on the hardwood kept MacEwan's efforts up until the final buzzer.
Both teams showed the crowd here in Calgary an exciting match and gave a preview of what is to be anticipated on both sides for the rest of the regular season.
The Cougars now go into a bye week before heading up to Edmonton where they will face the University of Alberta Golden Bears. Catch the game on
