WBBALL: GMU (60) at MRU (83)
The Mount Royal University Cougars women's basketball team hosted the MacEwan University Griffins for their first home game of the season. MRU put on a show for the home crowd, defeating GMU 83-60.
The Cougars opened the game on an 11- 2 run for what would be a fiery game. It didn't take long for the Griffins to close the gap, bringing the score within three and ending the quarter with MRU up 23-20.Â
Both teams had impressive defensive appearances with Mount Royal claiming 39 rebounds and MacEwan 35, but it was the Cougars who truly showed up on the stat sheet with 17 steals.
Tanis Metcalfe used her height to her advantage, with four defensive rebounds and 10 points to assist in the impressive season opening with MRU cougars.Â
In her second on court coaching season,
Robyn Fleckenstein has breathed new life into this MRU team. Under her,
Bella Gaulden,
Jenika Martens and Metcalfe were all able to put up double digits on the scoreboard tonight. Â
Martens took home the player of the game title after giving the Cougars 23 points, adding blocks, assists and steals to her stat sheet. She has demonstrated that she will be one to watch in the paint this year. Gaulden also had an impressive showing tonight, with 17 points, two steals, and four assists while being a true on court leader.Â
The most impressive play of the night came in the third quarter when Mount Royal found a perfect rhythm and put up a massive 33 points while holding MacEwan to just nine. The Cougars nearly doubled their first half score in 10 minutes and showed the biggest lead of the night with a lead of 30.Â
GMU Shannon Majeau, Noelle Kilbreath, Darian Mahmi and Mackenzie Farmer accounted for 47 of the teams 60 points from the night, with all four women hitting the double digits.Â
The two teams will find each other on the hardwood again tomorrow night at Kenyon Court for a 4 p.m. tip off. Make sure to catch it live or tune in to
Canada West TV presented by Co-op. This is a game you won't want to miss.

MBBALL: GMU (64) at MRU (93)
The Mount Royal Cougars men's basketball team had a dominant home opening performance tonight, topping the MacEwan Griffins 93-64.Â
MRU was able to prevent GMU from taking the lead at any point during tonight's match up, with their biggest lead of the night reaching 31 in the final moments of the fourth quarter.
Dylan Lutes led the cougars on offence, putting up 17 points in just over 22 minutes of play. Lutes also collected five rebounds for the team and had two steals to round off his stat sheet for the night.Â
Lutes wasn't the only player with a good night on the paint. Both
Holt Tomie and
Lincoln Anderson scored double digits with a total nine rebounds between the two of them.Â
This Cougars team is a different beast from what we have seen before. The confidence of the players was felt by everyone in the stands as they found a perfect rhythm and were able to connect on multiple sharp passes through Griffin bodies and finish on the posts.Â
As a team, Mount Royal was able to grab 43 rebounds, and make nine steals. The bench alone was able to score 31 of the team's points in tonight's match.Â
GMU came back at MRU and was able to collect 41 rebounds of their own. Luke Harold kept the Griffins alive, getting 19 points alongside Alex Jap with 16 of his own. Â
Tomorrow the men will face off again for a 6 p.m. tip off in Kenyon Court where MRU will work to continue their win streak to two. Catch the game on

The University of Calgary Dinos defeats Mount Royal University Cougars 7-6 in a scrappy, penalty-filled, scoring fest Friday night at the Calgary Flames Community Arena.
Â
MRU opened the scoring just over a minute into the first period after
Riley Sawchuk attacking zone faceoff win went straight to
Nolan Yaremko in between the hash marks, who unleashed a slapshot that beat Dinos goalie Brodan Salmond glove side.
Â
U of C responded quickly with two goals. Riley Stotts dangled his way up the left side from centre ice beating two MRU defenders before finding Kaden Elder skating straight towards the net. Elder one-timed the puck into a wide-open Cougars net. Â Max Patterson found an open Jaegar White who sniped home a wrister over Morris's shoulder a minute later.
Â
On the man advantage, a slapshot from
Levi Kleiboer from the left point was tipped in front by
Josh Tarzwell, tying the game up 2-2 going into the second.
Â
MRU came out red hot in the second period putting up three goals in the first ten minutes. A battle on the left boards was won by
Ryley Lindgren, who found
Sean Richards hanging out in the right circle. Richards backhand spinnerama beat a sprawling Salmond. From below the goal line, Sawchuk found an unmarked Yaremko, who released a laser beating Salmond clean over his left shoulder. A wrister from Kaden Jensen bounced off the right pad of Salmond right onto the tape of Sawchuk in front of the net and one-timed past the blocker of the U of C goalie. This ended Salmond's, as he allowed five goals on 15 shots.
Â
A scramble ensued in front of the MRU net with just over a minute remaining in the second. Morris was unable to locate the puck and cover it up. Bradley Schoonbaert, who had been knocked down earlier in the play, swiped at the puck, and it slid into the bottom left corner of the net. This goal would be the start of U of C's comeback.
Â
In the third, two powerplay opportunities allowed U of C to tie up the game. Stotts set up Elder in the left circle for his second goal of the night. A few minutes later, a bouncing puck in the middle of the zone ended up on Stotts stick, who one-timed it past the shoulder of Morris.
Â
A turnover by MRU at their blue line seemed to be harmless until Sean Strange sent a floater on goal, handcuffing Morris. The rebound was scooped up by a diving Josh Rieger. This goal would end Morris's night after letting six goals in on 15 shots.
Â
MRU answered back with a short-handed two-on-one three minutes later. A beautiful tic-tac-toe play between Yaremko and Sawchuk tied the game back up.
Â
The game-winning goal was scored on a short-handed two-on-one. Elder's shot was deflected high into the air and batted into the net by Stotts, who was sitting on the ice after losing his balance moments prior.
Â
MRU looks to redeem themselves tomorrow night at Calgary at 6:00pm. Catch the game on
Canada West TV presented by Co-op.
