On Saturday afternoon, the Mount Royal University Cougars defeated the Trinity Western University Spartans 5-0 in another scoring fest.

The Cougars had a massive first period, scoring four goals on 15 shots.

On a clearing attempt from inside the MRU blue line, forward Aliya Jomha banked the puck off the left side glass, springing Tatum Amy on a breakaway. Amy deeked out TWU goalie, Kate Fawcett, tucking the puck behind her on a backhand wrister.

Sydney Benko's first U SPORTS goal was a beauty. Benko battled a TWU defender from below the goal line, carrying the puck to the front of the net, dragging it across the crease from right to left, jamming it home.

A shot from the right point by Amy resulted in a juicy rebound off the pads of Fawcett to a wide-open Cougars forward, Tianna Ko, waiting inside the left circle. Ko did not hesitate as she one-timed the rebound into the back of the net, giving MRU their first powerplay goal of the afternoon and a 3-0 lead.

Benko sped up the left wing creating a two-on-one opportunity with teammate Kaia Borbandy heading straight for the net. Borbandy tipped a shot pass from Benko over the blocker of Fawcett for her first U SPORTS goal.

MRU added their final goal of the game in the second period during a five on three powerplay. A shot from the right point by Emma Bergesen hit Fawcett in the chest. The TWU goaltender could not secure the puck leaving a rebound for Taylor Sawka, who was sitting at the top of the crease. Sawka buried the rebound, putting the Cougars up 5-0 going into the third.

The Cougars played an exceptional hockey game, filled with numerous shots, flawless passing, and lots of offensive zone time. Zoe De Beauville recorded her first shutout of the season, facing 17 shots on goal.

MRU looks to keep up this momentum against their city rivals, the University of Calgary Dinos, next Friday at 7:00pm. Watch the game on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.

Entering the final weekend of the conference schedule, the Lethbridge Pronghorns battled back from two goals down early in the second half to earn a 2-2 tie with the visiting Mount Royal Cougars in Canada West women's soccer action.

Lucy Mundy scored both goals for the Pronghorns, while Janai Martens scored twice for the Cougars.

With the tie, the Pronghorns move to 1-9-1 on the season, while the Cougars now sit 3-6-2.

Following a scoreless first half, the Cougars took control early in the second half, with two quick goals only to see the Pronghorns battle back with two goals of their own, also only minutes apart just 15 minutes shy of full time.

The Cougars were rewarded in the 52nd minute. Isabella Chirico's cross deep in the penalty area found a streaking Janai Martens, who made no mistake to give Cougars the 1-0 lead.

Only minutes later, the Cougars were back at it and were rewarded with a penalty following a collision in the box. Martens put home the penalty in the bottom right corner for her second goal of the day and the season.

In the 77th minute, the Pronghorns had a great chance off a set piece. Colette Mofkaham Cross into the box found the head of a Ellie Kabayama but the ball just slid wide.

Minutes later the Pronghorns push was rewarded with a penalty kick following a Cougar handball in the box. Midfielder Lucy Mundy promptly picked the top right corner for her team leading third goal of the season.

Playing in the final game of the 2021 Canada West conference schedule, the Lethbridge Pronghorns looked to close out on a positive note, but the result ended in heart break with the Mount Royal scoring in the 88th minute and in injury time to pick up a 2-0 win in Canada West men's soccer action.

The loss drops the Pronghorns to 0-9-2, while the Cougar improve to 6-1-3.

Looking to play spoiler as the Mount Royal Cougars were hoping to solidify their spot atop the Prairie Division, the Pronghorns stymied the Cougars attack for the majority of the first 88 minutes but two late goals spoiled otherwise a great defensive effort.

Coming into the final game, the Cougars held a two-point lead on the Calgary Dinos for the top spot, however the Dinos had two games remaining. The win and combined with the Calgary Dinos loss today, the Cougars have secured top spot in the Prairie Division.

Quality scoring chances were a premium in the opening half, with shot attempts favoring Lethbridge, 4-3 at the break and the only close chance of breaking the deadlock was a Cougar chance in the 31st minute.

The defensive stalemate continued into the second half with majority of the play remaining between the 30-yard lines.

Following a second yellow card of the day to David Musk, the Pronghorn had to play the final five minutes down a man and the Cougars were able to take advantage.

Off a free kick, David Schaefer's strike beat the Pronghorns' goalkeeper in the top right corner. The goal was Schaefer's sixth of the season.

In injury time, the Cougars were rewarded with a penalty kick and Mohamed El Gandour stepped up and sealed the Cougars victory and top spot in the Prairie Division heading into playoffs.

It was another game script that was ruled by special teams on Saturday as the MRU Cougars were stellar on the power play, scoring two of their three markers on the man-advantage. The Spartans, who had stopped six of seven MRU power plays in Saturday's game, had no answers for the Cougars as they snapped the puck around in TWU's defensive zone.

MRU struck twice in the first period as Brad Kennedy connected with Ryley Lindgren and Riley Sawchuk on the power play to put the Spartans at odds early.

Logan Casavant made a series of flashy plays throughout the game to draw penalties and get to the MRU net. Although Casavant's efforts were well-worked, MRU goaltender Riley Morris could not be stopped.

MRU forward Riley Sawchuk capped off the game with his fourth goal of the weekend. Sawchuk scored with two minutes remaining to bring the game to a 4-0 close in favour of the visiting Cougars.
