MRU beats TWU in home opener
Box Score
Home Games:

WHCKY: TWU (1) at MRU (8)

Mount Royal University Cougars defeats the Trinity Western University Spartans 8-1 in a scoring frenzy home-opener Friday night at the Calgary Flames Community Arena.

Courtney Kollman opened the scoring just over six minutes in with a shot from the top left circle. The puck slid under the pads of TWU goalie Mabel Maltais who had little to no view of the shot as she was screened in front.

A laser pass from Anna Purschke on the left point to Aliya Jomha, who was left all alone in front of the net, one-timed the puck into the top left-hand corner of the net to put the Cougars up 2-0 going into the second period.

Mackenzie Butz walked in from the point to the top of the right circle and beat Maltais glove side midway through the second period.

A TWU defender attempted to block a shot from Kollman, resulting in an unfortunate deflection over the shoulder of the Spartans goalie, giving the Cougars forward her second goal of the night.

The Spartans were back in the game with a slap shot from the right point by Ryleigh White that beat Zoe De Beauville over her blocker side.

In the third period, MRU caught TWU off guard as Breanne Trotter dangled her way to the front of the net 16 seconds in beating Maltais above the pads on the blocker side.

The Cougars went on to score three more goals in five minutes, putting them up 8-1. Laura Cook scored her first-ever U SPORTS goal on a powerplay opportunity that beat a screened Maltais. Less than a minute later, Emma Bergesen's slapper from the right point went through the five-hole of Maltais. Taylor Sawka scored her first U SPORTS goal to cap off the night for the Cougars as she beat Maltais sliding in the opposite direction.

MRU dominated the entire game offensively, getting 52 shots on goal and spending minimal time in their own end.

The Cougars look to keep up this scoring gallery in tomorrow afternoon's rematch against TWU at 3:00pm at the Calgary Flames Community Arena. Catch the game on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.

Trinity Western played in their long-awaited home opener at the Langley Events Centre against Mount Royal on Friday, falling 9-0 to the visiting Cougars.

The Spartans (0-3-0) were outmatched in a physical, and speed-reliant bout between the two Canada West sides which saw MRU score five shorthanded goals on the Spartans.

MRU wasted no time in taking control of the game as the visiting Cougars found various ways to score. The first goal of the game came on a point shot taken by MRU defenseman Connor Blake. Blake's shot was beautifully tipped by Riley Sawchuk, who added two more in the later stages of the game to complete a hat-trick.

The game drew to a close as MRU's defensive group tightened up to earn a shutout for the Cougars' goaltender, Riley Morris.
