The University of Alberta Golden Bears secured a 1-0 win over Mount Royal's men's soccer team for the Cougar's home opener at stadium field this Saturday October 2.
Alberta's Rilind Idrizi got a header off a clear attempt by the cougars, sending the ball through traffic and high into the back of MRU's netting. Idrizi's goal finally put the Golden Bears up on the scoreboard after 87 minutes of scoreless, aggressive play from both teams.Â
The game was full of action, seeing five yellow cards awarded within the second half of play. Two to MRU's
Drake Rendle and
Caden Rogozinski, and the remaining three to Alberta's Garry Onyejelem, Morgan Graham and Noah Cunningham.Â
The Cougars men came out fighting with intense pressure offensively met by an impressive performance by Alberta's Liam Collens, seeing nine huge saves from a hard Cougar attack.
MRU's
Miguel Da Rocha demonstrated skill and leadership throughout the game with consistent tackles giving possession back to Mount Royal and providing them with promising opportunities. He also made his mark offensively with three strong shots at Collens.
"We played the way we wanted too. We wanted to be better than them and I feel like we were on the ball," says Da Rocha. "We just have to be a little more aggressive tomorrow and take those points back."
The men head up for a rematch against the Golden Bears tomorrow in Edmonton. Tune in for the 2:15 p.m. kick off on Canada West TV.Â
