The Mount Royal University Cougars defeated the University of Alberta Golden Bears 3-1 in a hard-hitting home opener.

The Cougars came out in the first period with a burst of energy, having four shots on goal within the first five minutes.

A last-minute powerplay goal in the first period by Nolan Yaremko scored MRU's first goal of the regular season. Yaremko sped up the right side of the boards, crossing in front of the crease and roofing the puck in the top left-hand corner of the net over goaltender Taz Burman's shoulder.

Four minutes into the second period, Spencer Moe scored off a juicy rebound left right in front of the net. A shot from Kade Jensen bounced off of the pads of Burman and was quickly collected by Moe.

In the third period, the Golden Bears came out attacking. A scramble in front of the MRU net resulted in a pinball goal shot by Josh Prokop sliding through the five-hole of Riley Morris, cutting MRU's lead in half.

The Cougars were able to hold onto a one-goal lead but sealed the win with an empty netter scored from center ice by Yaremko with 22.3 seconds remaining.

MRU is looking to continue this momentum against the Golden Bears in tomorrow night's rematch at Calgary Flames Community Arena at 6 p.m. Catch the game on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.
