CALGARY - The Mount Royal University Cougars hosted the University of Saskatchewan Huskies for their final matchup of the season on Kenyon Court.
The set scores were: 26-24, 25-20, and 25-19.
For Mount Royal, fifth year Chantel Park led with 17.5 points and 16 kills, followed by Cassidy Kitchen with 11 points and nine kills. For Saskatchewan, Emily Koshinsky led with 18 points and kills, closely followed by Olivia Mattern with 16 points and 15 kills.
The Huskies opened the scoring with a quick kill from Mandi Fraser. However, the Cougars soon pulled ahead into a three point lead. Fraser landed a series of kills to narrow the score gap, but the Cougars stayed a step ahead. A kill from Huskie's Taylor Annala tied the score at 20 and momentarily brought them into the lead. Mount Royal snuck ahead and landed a final kill from Cassidy Kitchen to win the set.
Saskatchewan's Mattern opened the scoring for the second with a kill. The two teams were matching each other at every point, unable to pull away for even a moment. The Huskies finally broke the trend with two kills from Emily Koshinsky. Mount Royal capitalized on some slight Huskies miscommunications to pull ahead once more and finish with a kill by Park.
The Huskies found some clear opportunities for kills early in the third, opened by Mattern and Allard. The Cougars soon responded with their own, capitalizing on some strong blocks. Mount Royal pulled ahead to lead by a consistent two points. Despite some strong kills from the Huskies, they carried their lead to take the final set.
The Cougars will play next against the University of Regina Cougars on Friday, February 7th. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
